Best State for Guns

Congrats to FL and AK on the F+:D
Disapointed in VA, only a C-
California, Mass, Joisey, and MD:barf:

Umm, definitely not CT.

I like Florida, guns everywhere, shooting ranges in public parks, and state funded roadsigns for shooting ranges. Also, a large variety of people shoot in Florida, of all races and all walks of life, you dont see that as much in CT. I cant wait to go back to Florida this summer.

Be careful about thinking that States without requirements are the best. I was just reading the Federal School Safety Zone (a School Safety Zone is anywhere within 1000 feet of a School; which means even if you are in your car passing in front of a school...) chapter in the USC (18 U.S.C. 922(q)(2)(B)) which states the allowance for State CHL's to possess a firearm within a School Zone.
18 U.S.C. 922(q)(2)(B)(2) said:
if the individual possessing the firearm is licensed to do so by the State in which the school zone is located or a political subdivision of the State, and the law of the State or political subdivision requires that, before an individual obtains such a license, the law enforcement authorities of the State or political subdivision verify that the individual is qualified under law to receive the license;
First, without a state CHL, you may not carry a loaded firearm within the School Safety Zone, period (unless you're a police officer, ...).

Secondly, even when a State issues a CHL, there was a court case (Southern District of Alabama vs. Wiley Block Tait) where an Alabama CHL holder (Tait) was arrested in a School Safety Zone while possessing a handgun. Even though he had a CHL, because Alabama's CHL requirements did not require a FBI background check, it was determined that Alabama didn't pass the "verification" clause of 18 U.S.C. 922(q)(2)(B)(2) :banghead:

Tait did have felony charges, which were not considered at the time of his CHL issuance.

So, for those states that have little or no requirements for a CHL, if you are arrested while in a School Safety Zone you are in violation of 18 U.S.C. 922(q)(2)(B).

You have to look beyond the letter of the law. In that respect, Alaska is far better than Vermont.

Splitting hairs here, but the OP said "continental state," so AK and HI are out-of-bounds.

if you're going to work in the metro NYC area (NJ/NY/CT), then CT is your state (quasi-shall-issue CCW with few off-limit provisions, some EBR bans but you can have all NFA stuff).

The problem with CT is their 14-day waiting period for long guns. Nothing like that in NY state--I don't know about NYC.

Brady F rating states are A states for firearms rights advocates. The last I checked Alabama and Louisiana had the F so I think they are among the best. Arkansas is D- and that would be A-, same with Texas I think.

Look at each factor, for me, CC permit and free private sale at gun shows is most important.

AK is still part of the same continent. You're thinking of contiguous.
You're correct there--sorry. A lot of people use "continental US" to mean "the lower 48," but it isn't technically accurate.

Whats the best US continental state for having, owning, using etc, guns. I mean in Laws the most free one.

Probably Alaska or Vermont. Texas isn't too bad either!

The brady campaign report card system is almost worthless. I just ran my state (NE), and it showed we're a B-

Well, as far as I can tell they haven't updated their "report cards" in awhile.

I'm in Missouri and I'm happy as a clam- The only aggravation is having to get a permit to purchase a handgun, but other than that, a good gun state-

MO sucks you cant have any class 3's here
also the cool part is the permit in clay county is same day no waiting period... gotta love that

Vermont's sticking point is that they disallow suppressors. It's a hold-over in the hunting laws (ya know ya need silent guns to poach).

Alaska is excellent, seems to allow everything:) .
Mississippi laws look pretty good.
Nevada seems nice.

Forget it. Y'all won't like it here. I just spent a couple weeks in Fairbanks working on my house and the early morning temps were -42 to -44F every morning.

The Brady/VPC pukes needs to do new report cards soon. We have a new "Castle Doctrine" law on the books as well as statutory prohibitions that have criminal sanctions for anyone confiscating firearms during a natural or man-made disaster.:D

the 14 day wait is waived if you have a valid CT pistol permit. under the permit process, during business hours you get an instant background check and voila, transfer.

Yeah, I was noticing that they hadn't updated Ohio for our new preemption law when I also noticed they said, regarding the federal AWB, "the federal law will sunset in 2004 unless Congress and President Bush renew it."

Of course, I also see that NRA-ILA hasn't updated for Ohio's preemption either. At least they're aware that the AWB expired :p

Yes both them pages are really out dated. Ohio would have a far worse grade for Brady's tripe now. They haven't mentioned all the progun Democrats elected in Ohio either and so on.

These pages are accurate for about the year 2000 at best in most occasions and alot has changed since then.

Hey, speaking of, how's Montana coming along? They sounded like they were itching for a Brady "we don't have a grade low enough for you" ruling. :D

For all the nice talk of Vermont and NH, I have to confess the sheer number of statist nonsense just south of you makes me wonder what your future will be like. I mean, as bad as the CA-exodous problem is in the West, it's not quite so... big and close, ya know?

Kentucky

Gets an F from brady bill website. That makes it a pretty good gun state I would imagine. I think only Kentucky and Alabama or something have F's but i didnt scroll through all of them.

Not enough Montana in this thread. Don't they have Vermont carry too?

I am happy with MS.

We have open carry, concealed carry, provisions for Short Barrel Shotguns, Short Barrel Rifles, and Silencers. Class III is obviously contingent on post dealer or grandfathered stuff with appropriate registration. And no AWB.

We have castle docrine, have now passed specific legislation regarding emergency seizure prohibitations, and ease of transportation.

I'll take it :)

Don't forget about places to actually shoot. Some states have great gun laws (less restrictive) but no place to shoot. California has some annoying legal restrictions, but we have millions and millions of acres of BLM and NF land to shoot on.
