And by long range, I mean about 300-400 yards tops. In most cases, I will probably shoot right around 200 yards.

The scope I am currently considering is a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44PA. Before I pull the trigger on this one, I wanted to get some more opinions on other options I should consider within the same price range.

It will be outfitted with a Remington 700 SPS in .308. Thanks!

For paper punching only, the Weaver T24 is alot of scope for the money! Heres what it would look like on your Rem 700:) I'm very happy with my Bushnell 3200 5-15x40, too, for about the same price. The Weaver has a very fine 1/8 moa dot, for very small targets, and will only work off a bench or very well supported position.

I don't know the price but probably under $100. I have a http://www.crosman.com/optics/riflescopes/adventure/CPA416AORG that was $80 & I'm happy with it. I also like the bushnell for the price but I think this Center Point gives you more for the money.

However they are not good enough for competition without compusating because they only adjust within 1/4" @ 100 yards. If your just hunting varmint the 3/8" @ 300 yards is close enough.

For those reading that the math doesn't add up for them. 1/4" @ 100 yards will bring you within 1/8" of your target (which is better then most ammo can give you) multiplied by 3=3/8" @ 300 yards.

The Sightron scopes are great value for the money. I used one in 36X on a target rifle and it was excellent.

I also have the Bushnell 3200 5-15x40. I don't have a lot of miles on it but it seems to be a fine scope for the money. No regrets.

I'm going to try out the Burris Tactical, I think Natchez has them on sale this mo.

By saying sub $500, it seems like you want a pretty nice scope. If you just want a scope to play around with, however, I just got a Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20x50 for $80 that's really darn good for the price. Don't let the low price fool you!

I'm by no means an optics snob, but I know good optics when I see them. Up to 10x, it's pretty good in low light, and at the range during the day, it'll be plenty bright through the whole range. >10x in low light is still fine, but you can tell that it starts to get slightly darker. Plus, for me, it doubles as a spotting scope :) The optics won't blow you away, but for the price, it's a steal.

Got mine at natchez.

+1 on the Bushnell 3200. SniperCentral.com has a good review and picked it for their "entry level" sniper rifle.

For shooting at 200 or past at night I wouldnt go smaller than a 50 front lens. I use 2 rifles at night one an older fixed 8 by 40 leuplod that was the top of the line scope when my father purchased it many years ago and a 4 to 16 by 50 mark optics scope that was about 180. in the spot light at 250 the mark optics with the bigger front lense is so much brighter

I have a Bushnell 4200 on my CZ 527 varmint and I am more than pleased with it... would definitely recommend it. More than adequate for your set range of shooting.

bushnell is the way to go for that price range i think, no matter which model. i think you could even get a base 6500 model for that kind of money. love mine.

if you get that vortex make sure you give us a good review. in fact, i halfway want you to get the vortex just for that

I am going to agree here; the Weaver new 40.44 line, for a 200 dollar scope, really seems double tough to beat, that and their superslam series of course, uses Japanese glass. I have lots of respect for the japanese ... well... anything when it comes to any type optics.

I have also used the Weaver t 36 scope; for a varmint/target type scope, it is double
tough to beat.

Its a Rem700 LH Custom built up by Shilen rifles and additional work by H.S. Precision. Caliber 22-250.

I only shoot out to 300 yards with my .308, the Nikon Pro-Staff 3-9x40 is great for this purpose, although I will say I like the Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 that is mounted on my Mini-14, better! You can't go wrong with either one, for $200, the Nikon or the Burris.:)

I have a Bushnell 3200 and like it a lot.

I recently picked up a TruGlo 6-24x44 and put it on my Remmy 700 and was pleasantly surprised with how well it does. It had better light transfer than the Simmons next to it on the shelf and the 1/8 moa target click turrets. Holds up to .308 with no issues.

I would consider a Sightron with the dot reticle it is very fine. The scope is excellent for the money plus lifetime warranty. 3 x 9 power is enough for 400 yds. Many people use a 10X scope for 1000 yds and our military snipers for the longest time was what they were always issued.
