couple weeks ago i started a thread asking "how does one prepare for the possibility that a sudden home invasion might not be common criminals, but actually SWAT?":

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=594587

The prominent answer seemed to be, "Dont be guilty of a crime."

So earlier today i started a thread about another SWAT team invading the house of a non-criminal over student loans, asking "how do i let SWAT know that I'm surrendering?":

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=596947

The only answer there was "you won't be able to do anything except get shot."

So if i avoid crime, and SWAT still invades, and surrendering to them is futile, what else is left?

Obviously the title of this post is sardonic in order to gain attention. But the question still remains, as law-abiding gun owners, how can we defend our homes when we cant tell if the invasion is sanctioned by the government or not? Seeing as how this is happening more and more, we need to pay attention and discuss this right now. but, I'm sure this thread will be locked by the moderators in 2 secs, so you can go back to enjoying more threads about top 5 best/worst and walmart ammo prices.

Well, you basically have few options.

1. You give up by default before you can make a positive ID. They may be police, they may not be, you take the risk or gamble.

2. You defend yourself until you can make an ID. You take the risk that it may be police with a no-knock not identifying itself.

Goal #1 is always to walk away alive. Neither situation can guarantee that. But if you are the last man standing at the end of the altercation, at least you get a jury to decide your fate.

The inherent danger in option number 2 is that even if you ID them as police and you stand down, if you are holding a gun they will probably shoot as soon as they see it. Naturally I would not condone or suggest unlawfully harming an innocent. I think we all agree on that. But that won't stop them from blowing your head off if you don't drop your gun before they see you holding it.

So is this one. I wouldn't recommend a third.

We're simply not going to have a discussion about how, when, or why to shoot cops, even if the cops are 100% in the wrong.

Sure, it's a valid question, and if you want to have a discussion about how to react if cops enter your home either illegally or by mistake that's fine, but we're not going to start the discussion by talking about a firefight.

You could try a VERY carefully crafted discussion in Strategies and Tactics if you would like but I urge discretion and some careful thought be put into exactly how you word things. Using outlandish thread titles to draw attention to the topic would be one of the things to avoid.
