Zak, I'm really surprised by those numbers! When it comes time to put a new barrel on the 300 Win Mag or have it re-chambered (assuming the barrel is good), I'll take a long, hard look at the 7mm RM for sure. It seems like there's no downside to the calibers that you mentioned earlier i.e. 7mm RM, 7mm WSM, .280 Remington (7mm-08), 6.5-06, or .260 Rem ... other than the need to buy a bunch more dies! I assume that brass is [now and forever more] readily available. How about barrel/throat life compared to the older calibers?

:)

Bottom line it’s a matter of preference I have been shooting a Remington model seven in 308 for close to 29 years and never felt I was missing a thing, my grandfather was fond of saying it’s not the arrow it’s the Indian behind the arrow a simple matter of marksmanship and skill.

I don't know if anybody has noticed the lack of powder or primers, hell components in general. with exception of the '06 you could load an extra .308win for every four of those super silly mag or the .300 mag. Powder is hard to come by nowdays..... some food for thought.... the .308 efficiency of powder burned to velocity is far greater than any other .30 EVER!!! End of Discussion

i read somewhere that you can build a wsm rifle out of a .308 ar platform,is this true?in regards to the size of the magwell accommoadating the round.

Except for all the other 30 cal cartridges that are much much more efficient than 308.

300/221fireball, 300 sav, 7.62x39 and most of all 30BR make 308 win look like an inefficient powder h0g for the velocity you achieve.

Besides powder supplies aren't the problem, we can get plenty of propellant. PRIMERS that's the issue and one shooting 308 doesn't get you out of

My personal vote would be the 30-06 springfield, it is completly adequate for all north american big game and I would get in in the Remington 700 which is by far the most accurate bolt gun that is mass produced. Dont worry about the small ballistic gains of the magnums the accuracy of the 06 will make of for marginal ballistic gain.

I'm not sure I would agree with the newly made factory Remington 700 being the most accurate rifle made today. They are nice and a great base for an awesome rifle but its a big claim to say they are the best shooting mass produced rifles.

I like the .308, it will do 99% of what a 30-06 will do, up to 165 grain bullets. Even with 180 grain bullets, its not too far behind. The selection of rifles is superior in .308, the recoil is tolerable to most shooters and its extremely accurate in most rifles. If I were rifle shopping today, I'd pass the 30-06 right up and get a .308. Also, barrel life on the .308 is very good, eight to ten thousand rounds is not uncommon.
