Reading this thread brought a question to my mind:
What IS legal in Ca???????

I grew up in Rohnert Park and went to SRJC for three years (starting in Fall 1979). I left CA in 1990, and SR had definitely turned nastier in that time.

I suggest a lock and chain. I used to drape a heavy chain over my shoulders, with the lock locked on one end. I grabbed one end of it in preparation for using it once, when a group of yoots were blocking my path. They would have won the fight, but I was determined to have company in the hospital. They parted like the Red Sea.

If you carry a chain, you must practice with it to know how it behaves when it hits something, as well as knowing your reach.

Fortunately, a bicyclist needs to have excellent awareness for safe biking, so that should help you see at least some trouble before it reaches you.

Stay safe,
Dirty Bob

Id be worried about amonia. Some ppl realy love their dogs. Thats all I need is some dog nut watching me spray their family member with pepper spray. When "He was a friendly dog", and the try to sue me.

Hey I resemble that remark!

I'm thinking that rigging up chaff, flares, and oil slicks a la Spy Hunter / F14 and making your getaway would be better than standing your ground, when the gangs are chasing you. But instead of dropping regular chaff, your "chaff" will consist of shiny gold chains with medallions, which are just made of tinfoil like on those chocolate gold coins, but by the time they figure that out, you are gone. :p :)

Where I live, it's illegal to carry any kind of weapon. Firearms, knives, pepper sprays, you name it.

Too bad that criminals are usually prepared with weapons, numbers, ambushes, picking their targets or any combination thereof.

Basically, unless the criminal is alone and stupid enough to attack a superior foe, you're screwed. And even then fistfights can bring about serious injuries.

When he said gangs I was thinking gangs of dogs, not gangs as in homies with saggy pants. For some reason I doubt that chase would last long.

Some sort of pepper spray & if you need to, dismount & keep the bike between you & your new "friend" while you hose 'em down. A frame pump can make a good improvised impact weapon as well.

If you're wearing semi-normal person clothing a SmartCarry around the waist can work. I tried it for some mellow riding in the usual spandex bike gear & as long as I wasn't sitting up much it was decently concealed. Not a whole lot of comfortable, but faster to access than inside the CamelBak.

LMAO! Gangs of homies with saggy pants. Awesome.

This is why they made the Stevens ''bicycle pistol'' back when the front wheel of the bicycle was as tall as we were.Seriously, this has been a problem as long as there were bicycles, and still is ,especially in rural areas.People out here in the sticks tend to keep large agressive dogs and they let them roam the property while they're at work.Unfortunatly, the dog sometimes takes as it's property as ''as far as I can see'',and often will jump a fence, and make a friend with a neighbor dog,and they soon make a pack.As a pack, anything they see moveing can be inturpeted as ''flight'' sending the persue message to their furry little minds, and the next thing you know, you're being chased by a pit bull,a rottweiler and a doberman.
