Bigger hand grips

Having now got to the point of regularly shooting my Pietta 58 New Model Army I think the one thing that is holding me back from good scores is the fact the I can only hold it with the first 3 fingers of my right hand. My little finger curles up underneath the grip. ( I used to be called 'spade hands' at school ) so I want to make a bigger grip for it from wood.

Anyone have any tips or suggestions about this?

I read theys a BUNCH o good walnut in france, ya gots tha escutcheons from tha grips an screw, ya gots a pattern, well man GET ON WITHIT!! Ya gots a knife fer whittlin?

THA BOSS woulda made me use my teeth like a beaver! YOU gets ta use a knife!! :)
 
Duncan,......you might want to consider fashioning some grips that are extended,...like these on the US Firearms website ...grip page...the "Oversize Grip (elongated)"

...looks like they have an extra grip screw towards the bottom. You'd have to make some custom ones for your Pietta,...as those at USFA are all for the Colt clones. Just figured the picture might give you some idea.;)

Why not get Sophia a new set of nipples to go with that front (site),...:cool:

Thom, I already decided that I was going to do the work but I am always open to suggestions! I have a spare set of teeth around somewhere so I might try them first :D :D .
Nice bit of French walnut would be good BUT once people know you want it UP goes the price so I need to be sneeky!!!:rolleyes: :rolleyes:

Hey S_G why a Silver foresight? I blacken mine with sooty oil smoke before I shoot not polish it so the sun shines on it!

Ya puts tha silver front sight on cause it LOOKS good nexta a blued background but on bright sunny days ya smokes it so you aint lookin atta mirror. Or at least i do!

Nice job fitting that front sight Smokin ... i orderd a few extra front sight for my remmies ..don`t remember where i got them but was gonna cut dovetails on all my Piettas..... finished one and then done some horse tradeing and ended up with dovetailed front sights on the remmies i traded for .. Euro , Uberti and a ASM all had dovetailed front sights .. looks like these dovetail front sights i have left are taller than the ones on the guns i have that have them already .. it musta been Dixiegun or VTI that has the taller ones .anyway i think my collection of remmies is complete now got one of every maker now . be glad to send ya one of these taller ones if want one i won`t be needing them now .
 
I used to live where the Gibson Guitar Company had a factory. They used all kinds of fancy hardwood, and would cut off the ends of the boards and burn them as scrap. A friend got me enough scraps (?) to last a lifetime – all for free. These pieces had more then enough stock to make revolver grips, knife scales, etc. :)

So anyway, check your local lumberyard and see what might be in the scrap boxes. :evil:

We sometimes forget that during the 19th century people were much smaller in stature. Consequently revolvers handles that we find to be too little were just right at the time.

I think that's the reason I had taken it off my Tennessee Poorboy. I used orange model paint on it then. We'll see or not see what it shoots like. I could blacken the site ramp I suppose. Was just somthin' I tried out...looks kewl, LoL!

Would always be obliged for an offer like that. Are ya sure you may not wanna keep it just in case?
I was noticing on my Uberti, it's much wider than the ASP about twice as wide. The Uberti Rem accepted a standard rifle site with out too much trimmin'. If I were gonna convert the stud site on a Pietta or a Colt I might think about orderin' a ASP/Euroarms site. Know what I mean? Less dovetail less material to remove. Would need them special dovetail files though probly.
 
I discovered that the front sight made for German military Mausers made a good cap & ball revolver sight, and were generally cheap. Also those made for the English SMLE #4 rifles. Both have small dovetails and about the right height and width.

Smokein i`ve got 3 extras ..no problem .. i just checked the base of `em against the Uberti .. the Uberti base is much wider ... the ASM is much wider too...AW the Euro base is the same size .. so the dovetail will only fit the Euro remmie with out any modification ... if one will do ya any good send me a message with an address and i`ll drop one too ya .. gotta run to the post office wed anyway ..no problem .I just checked the height of these fron the top of the base to the top of the sight is 1/4 inch ... i must have got these from dixie cause VTI doesn`t sell front sights for the Euro Arms guns and Dixie doesn`t list what their remmie parts fit ...odd though there wouldn`t be anyway to make`em fit anything else but the Euro guns .. the other guns dove tail is much wider .
 
RE: Using Mauser or Enfield rifle sights.

I should have explained that these sights have small dovetails, which I like on a revolver, but I used them on barrels on which I cut the dovetail. (Read that to mean Colt Navy style guns with a "pin" front sight.) If your barrel is already dovetailed they might not work - unless you shortened the barrel.

Be that as it may, I've bought them for as little a fifty cents, out of a gun show vendor's junk box.

Duncan, I too, am lumbered with a hand like a buch of bananas, the Colt army 1860 feels just fine,[ I don't own one!] but I have your problem with my 1861 Navy Colt and my ROA. Ruger used to offer a brass backstrap-and -triggerguard assy. modeled after the Colt 1860 but I have'nt seen one for years, so I am contemplating having a bunch made up by friends with a small casting operation. A good fix for your 58 Rem would be to solder[silver or lead] a piece of steel on to the bottom of the grip, file to shape and fit new wood to it. This would put a little more weight back in your hand, making it feel less muzzle-heavy,not a bad thing with most CB revolvers.

The backstrap, stocks, and trigger guard off of an 1860 Army will fit your 1861 Navy. Buy the parts from the same maker that made the revolver. This switch was often done during the 19th century by individuals that needed either a smaller grip on an 1860 Army or larger one on either an 1851/61 Navy or S.A.A.
 
Walnut Buttstock End

This piece of walnut isn't pretty, but it looks big enough for Paul Bunyon. Once it's worked, there should be plenty left over for another 2or 3 fingers at the bottom.

I had to chose from better pictures of the wood or those that had clearer measurements. It may be somewhat 2 toned inside though, the butt end has a sealer applied, and it's very dry.

Stock wood

Wow! Thats a whale of a small pc of walnut! If anyone needs, I have some chunks of curly maple left over from gunstocks:evil:
 
Oversize SAA and Ruger XR3 Fitz Duramite pistol grips

I quit making pistol grips in 1979 when my factory burnt and my wood grip machines and my molding machines ruined too. But I have a dozen or so oversize Fitz Duramite a Nylon blend grips that were made for large hands and were good for long distance two handed shooting for the pistols mentioned in the message title and you are welcome to ask me for pictures by PMing me with your email address. The picture is of a standard stag design grip and the oversize grip together for only the two Pistols mentioned under any copy name with the same frames and they are cheap for hunting or knocking around with as they are tough and save your beautiful wood panels for display.
