Bill Cosby on Gun Violence?

Shouldn't this be in L&P?

Time for me to jump in, having just spent the last three years prosecuting drug cases and violent criminals, and now sitting on the bench judging the same (plus some other interesting cases). Know what I learned from all of this? It's a big secret, but I'll share it with all of you THR members...

RACE IS IRRELEVANT. IT IS NOTHING MORE THAN A DISCRIPTION, LIKE EYE COLOR, HAIR COLOR, HEIGHT, WEIGHT, AND GENDER.

Some of the worst criminals I've ever seen happened to be white. Drug dealers come in all shapes and colors. My favorite was the 480 pound white guy who sold lage amounts of marihuana, and would occassionally unhook his oxygen mask from his face to take a hit from his bong. I have seen some very respectible citizens who are black. I have seen some scum of the Earth that are white. I have met very honorable businessmen who are Chinese and Mexican. I looked a white serial child rapist in the eye.

What Dr. Cosby is doing is making the same statements as this, trying to make race irrelevant in favor of strong families and personal responsibility. And, you know what. It makes sense. Very rarely have I seen a criminal come from a strong family, with good values. And, here's a second little secret for you THR members...

RELIGION DOESN'T MATTER EITHER.

I met some "very religious" Christians who were guilty of unimaginable crimes against children. A respected church elder and Big Brother comes to mind. And, I've met an Imam who was very honorable, very wise, and working hard to stop some black on black violence in the Dayton area. And, imagine this, I met an atheist who believed that his honor and reputation were very important, and he was known in the legal community for his honor and integrity.

Stepping down from the soapbox now, and going back to my bench.

Emulating the entertainment industry

Bill Cosby has been very outspoken his whole time in the limelight.
He has been either the favorite or the disliked for years. He has finally focused his attention on the correct problem, but he is really trying to continue his black vs white routine.
The statement about the Peace corps. Not going to other countries but go across the street to the projects. Is a major bigoted idea.

"Gangsta' is one thing. The rest of the entertainment industry is another.:neener: Black time tv is a joke.
He bad mouthed "Amos and Andy" it was good humor, just like the barbershop stuff, funny.
Real life is a different situation. Years ago he was campaining in a different tone.

He is in the very industry that is the major culprit. Going to a college and complaining about what is happening in the projects is pretty lame. But it gets attention, it is a safe place to do that.
If he went to town meetings in the areas he is talking about, he would'nt last long on the circuit.

My four half pennies

Let me first state that I am an African American and proud of it. I do enjoy shooting and believe wholeheartedly in the the right to bear arms. I do agree with the Cos, firstly because as many of you have stated that, personal responsibility is primary need for many in black america, just as it is in every other corner of america. It really is not a race thing, yet because it seems that the black culture helps to highlight this problem it gets more press. Believe it or not there are a great deal of "personal responsibility problems" in white america, asian america, hispanic america etc.... Some suggest that blacks are handicapped by the welfare system, may I remind you that the welfare handicap is currently blind to color. There are more than just blacks enrolled!

Mr. Cosby is simply attempting to help those who most resemble himself to find some self respect, stand on their own two feet and make something of themselves. While we can sit and debate this issue well into the next millenia, could we possibly discuss ways that we here at THR can help not just black america, but all who need the help to take responsibility for their own actions. Personally, we can attempt to work together cross culturally. What does that mean you may ask well one of the greatest things someone who was not of my "race" did for me was to reinforce and even support my love of shooting. Through this mutual love for shooting I was taught life lessons about who I was and the decisions I made. How many of you are willing to take a kid that is not your own to the range and let them "burn a little of your powder?" Great opportunity to build a bridge, and teach them personal responsibility!

Just my two cents!

I think that Cosby is turning the leftist tactic of "blaming society" right back around on society. I am tired of hearing arguments that pose the idea that someone is simply a product of their environment and as such they shouldn't be held responsible for their actions. I have always held the idea that people contribute to society so if you blame society you would have to blame the people that made society what it was/is..

Cosby seems to be saying the exact same thing. If people are not a "product of their environment" then people MUST take responsibility for their own individual choices and actions. On the other hand, if people are indeed a "product of their environment" then one must look at who or what creates and maintains this environment. People need to be held responsible for making and keeping their environment what it is.

The bottom line is that Cosby is calling for people to take responsibility both for their actions and for the contributions they make to their society rather than simply make excuses to diffuse personal responsibility.

Let me also say that I agree whole heartedly with Blazer260. Cosby's overall message is not confined to a single race, ethnich group or social class, it applies to anyone and everyone that chooses to live life as they wish without taking personal responsability for the consequences of their life choices.

We are all well aware of this. Statements made earlier on do not insinuate that crime in this country is the product of minorities. However, numbers do not lie and we cannot ignore them. Crime is more prevalent in lower income areas, and this holds especially true for minority groups. Why? I don't know and I doubt anyone can sum it up easily.

OT, but it is really interesting when one looks at the breakdow of crime by race. While the white community percentage of offenders is far lower than minorities, white folks tend to be responsible for the most heinous crimes. Most pedophiles are white. Most serial killers are white. The black and hispanic offenders tend to be responsible for more robberies, assaults and "hot headed" murders (as opposed to cold and calculating). Rape seems to split fairly evenly.

Here is the part I fail to comprehend. I grew up in Parker, CO.- an upper middle class and primarily white community. Household incomes range from $120K to a half-million (my family was at the lower end, around $110K). In the high school I attended, there was a mere handful of minority students, about a dozen or so of them black. What I don't understand is how these kids could come from responsible, educated parents who made darn good money (these kids wanted for nothing), yet they still developed the proverbial chip on their shoulder and did their best to behave as though they'd come from the streets of some ghetto. As much as I hate placing the blame elsewhere, I would have to surmise that these kids developed their idea of what was "cool" and how they should act by listening to gangsta' music and watching the trash that comes from the black side of hollywood, in which there seems to be no end to how much they will glorify criminal behavior and street life. No doubt, these individuals are certainly responsible for their own actions, but growing up in a wealthy community with good schools and having little or no exposure to the lifestyle they seemed to long for, media portreyals seem to be the only influence that could have nurtured this. Worst part is, they would hide this from their parents. They knew full well their folks would be livid if they found out their kids were behaving like little thugs, so around the house the acted like normal human beings. I personally knew some of these kids and their parents, so this is no exaggeration or assumption. This is how it was.

Bill Cosby to speak to two meetings in Greenwood
Associated Press

GREENWOOD, Miss. - Bill Cosby is coming to the Mississippi Delta - not necessarily to tell jokes, but to speak about family and responsibilities.

Cosby is holding two meetings Monday at the Leflore County Civic Center. The first meeting, or "call-out," will focus on challenges faced by foster parents, foster children and grandparents who are raising children. The second is aimed at the general public.

"This is for the entire community, the whole community," said Curressia Brown. "Dr. Cosby's message is one of accountability and responsibility. It is not restricted by race. It applies to everyone."

Cosby was supposed to speak in November, but he had to return home to California because of a family emergency. Brown said Cosby is coming now to make good on his promise to return as soon as possible.

One of his guests will be civil rights activist Unita Blackwell, the daughter of sharecroppers who was born in 1933 and became Mississippi's first black female mayor. She was mayor of Mayersville for two decades and still lives there.

The meetings are being taped and will air as part of a documentary to be aired by Mississippi Public Broadcasting.
