Let me first say that I love revolvers, and of all the revolvers Rugers are my favorite so I was quite surprised when a friend on a motorcycle forum said that he would never buy a Ruger because Bill was a traitor for trying to ban hi cap magazines back in the 80's.

This was news to me, but after reading some articles online he appears to be correct.

My question to you guys is. Should I stop buying Rugers now? I know Smith had their hand in some shady legislations as well so does that mean I have to trade in my GP100 for a Taurus Tracker?

+1

Old news, and the new guys running Ruger now could give a sit less about not selling hi-cap rifles & mags.
If you want'm they will sell'm to you!

Same with S&W.
They were owned & managed by a British conglomerate at the time they made the deal with Slick Willy.

Now they are an employee owned American company again.
They have nothing to do with what happened then.

Yes, ancient history. If you look back at it, there was a real chance that all semi autos would be banned, so Ruger suggested a compromise. Not the right thing to do, IMO, but a ban could have sunk his company. Politics aside, Bill Ruger was a heck of a businessman, and gun designer, who based the success of his company on the shooting public, rather than government contracts.

Yep, an OLD issue that has just been beaten to death on the forums for.. well about as long as there have been forums I suppose. Whatever Bill Ruger did or didn't believe doesn't make a lick of difference. Personally, I judge a company on its products.

Uncle Billy didn't "try" to ban hi caps, he basically drafted the assault weapons ban for his bud, Bill Clinton.

Any thing to steer the coming legislation in such a way as to spare his precious mini-14 and potential financial loss.

Interesting turn of events, when you consider that the deadly game changing weapon used to kill three FBI agents during the infamous Miami shootout was....drumroll......a mini-14.

Funny, how the kids turned the company in a different direction and started offering factory hi-caps for their beloved mini to the civilian market.....but not until the saw all the money they were losing to the waves of AR manufacturers.

About as disingenuous as a fox hole conversion.

My personal grip with Ruger right now is how they said they "Took a clean sheet of paper and designed a new class of .380 pistols".

No mention of the fact the LCP is almost an exact copy of the Kel-Tec P3AT & it's parts list drawing, which preceded it by several years!

In the early 80's I was still watching GI Joe and Sesame Street so I wasn't into politics then.

I'll try to pass this info onto my buddy.

He made a mistake. He died over nine years ago. The company no longer follows this policy and, in fact, is making a wide range of CCWs for "simple civilians" (as he supposedly once referred to us). I don't think any Ruger family members are even on its board of directors.

Yeah, and he voted it in and then he signed it into law and everything, all by himself. It's all his fault.

Some people will obviously believe anything.

:banghead:

Seems like a silly question, sorta one of those "cutting off your nose to spite your face," kinda things. If Jimmy Carter manufactured a fine automobile or pistol I'd be interested. Even if that later guy did I wouldn't refuse a great product because I didn't like the CEO. What the heck, I have an iPhone and didn't think much of Jobs as a person.

pull the string on it...there's a lot of info. out there, but you might get your fan boy bubble burst when you look into it for yourself. The Democrats didn't exactly have a lot of gunny friends to advise them, until Bill Ruger told them how make an AWB work. Ban all features not on the his mini.

Ya know, I would think that a fox hole conversion would be fairly sincere, as it may be caused by experiencing the true heat of the fight. Besides, the reason for the conversion is a matter of the heart, and tough for a third party to judge.

Jus' sayin'.

THIS ^^^^^^^
They ripped off KT, I don't know why KT hasn't gone after them, other than they know they have loyal customers and a price point ~hundred less (same gun, different grip and sights) then add to it the 'new' line of SC pistols... yeah it's nice to know that ruger is back to chasing the all mighty dollar, still doesn't change the fact they sold out BIG time.

Won't buy one, wish I had bought a Knock Off 10/22 (Oh, Wait the sued those guys out of business for doing what they do/did to KT)

Should I stop buying Rugers now?

I assume you understand that he's dead and no longer owns the company and that the company no longer applies the policies that Mr. Ruger applied decades ago and now sell magazines with a capacity well above 20 rounds for their semi auto pistols and their AR clone.

Maybe because it isn't true? After the last couple of years of whining KT owners, I have yet to see one single shred of actual evidence that Ruger stole or copied anything. You know, like evidence of KT saying it themselves and/or suing Ruger for theft of intellectual property or patent infringement. If the LCP was an exact copy, it would jam frequently and be startlingly ugly. At least Ruger has not had to go out of business and change their name because they were making horrible firearms.

But, if you want to hate a manufacturer of an increasingly more amazing line of firearms due to unproven conjecture, that is of course your right.

I was insulted by Bill Ruger Sr. when he did that. At the same time he supported the trend to limit magazine capacity, he was seeking government approval for contracts and wanted to look good to the federal government, AND, he personally owned machineguns with HIGH CAPACITY magazines. Any such ban was good for us peons, but Bill didn't surrender his hi caps. But, as stated already, he is now gone, and SR CO has changed their policies and is now selling hi caps all over the place.

Please do. Stop buying Rugers and Smith & Wessons. It will leave more for me. ;)

Feel free to buy as many Taurus guns as you'd like. :D

I swore that I would never buy anything else from Bill Ruger. Then one day I realized that he had been dead for over ten years and that his company was now selling high capacity magazines and an AR varient. I will now buy Rugers again.

If you don't want to own some of the best firearms on the market because of some bad things done by a dead man over two decades ago, you can be my guest.

Just a reminder that it was Ronald Reagan that agreed to close the machine gun registry!!!!!!!! Doesn't mean he wasn't still a good president. It does prove that nobody is perfect on this earth.

Which "kids" turned the company in a different direction?
