Bizzare range session

I had a similar problem at an indoor range back in 2001. I'd been a regular there before they'd changed hands in the mid '90s, spending literally hundreds of dollars on range time. After picking up a Savage 10FP at a gunshow, I stopped there to try to get a bridge mount for it. I was treated so rudely by their "gunsmith" that I've never been back and have been badmouthing them ever since. None of my friends who used to go there go anymore. Royal Ridge Guns in Brunswick Hills, Ohio. A great place to avoid.

the ridiculus thing is that they decided, en mass no less, to cuss you out as you were LEAVING. what the hell is wrong with these people?
i'm with you sm, my backyard is more fun then any old public range! it would be nice to meet other shooters at a range, but dealing with the jerks is not my idea of a good time!

Freak out!

I have also had range employees freak out on me for no reason, THE DAY I PAYED MY ONE YEAR MEMBERSHIP (only $45). Me and a friend were shooting at the pistol range and another fellow picked a fight w/ us for no reason. We packed up to leave and he followed us to our car cursing, which got the attention of the range master who apparently knew this person and decided to join in the cursing and now threatening. I called the cops for the threatening and left for good. What can ya do? Crazy people are everywhere...

Those brass-catching nets are used by most Bullseye shooters. They can be ordered from Champion's Choice.

It's was similar to that one, but it was more jury rigged.

as I was leaving asked If I was welcome back and the reply was profanity laced diatribe. As I walked out the door I continued to be cursed with profanity by a female employee, the manager, who followed me out to my car harassing me along the way and intimidating me by standing so close I could smell her breath and barely open my door. the young male empolyee, a former cop, then gets involved acting bravada, throwing out chest and threatening to "kick my ass" as I pulled out of the parking lot.

This has nothing to do with brass or economic, sounds like really bad management. I've never heard of a business doing that- with a manager involved.

Even if your tone was rude or you insulted them, a business normally takes the high road because its rep is on the line. This place sounds like a second-rate operation. It may be too late to press charges for terroristic threats and harassment against the former-cop, but you should look into it ASAP.

Wow. If this happened to me I'd do everything and anything I can legally to destroy their business until they shut down. I wouldn't be able to let go of that type of incident. It's too bizarre and uncalled for on their part.

You ruin my day, I ruin your life.

I had some odd moments at an old indoor range that used to operate in south Anchorage. The teenager at the desk was po'd at everyone for no reason. I went there twice and never went back. It went out of business sometime after that. I've had some similar experiences with weird little gun shops. I went into one only to find the owner screaming at an employee with profanity-laced diatribes. They ignored me and I left. Another place is notorious for extreme hostility if they don't see the green of your money within the first minute.

It's like dogs who will bark at you more when you're leaving.

hinking he was worried about hot magnums, I told him, "Bullseye lead bullet target loads." He told me I could only shoot jacketed bullets on the range.

Which probably means that they have some lead abatement issues, or people were either bitching about hot air (in the summer) or cold air (in the winter) being circulated too fast.

?????????
Does'nt threatning to "Kick your ass" equate to an assault?
Call the cops, call the person who issues the license, call the owner listed on the license (might not be the same person as the manager), make as many people aware of this as possible. Might even want to call the local/state health dept (just to make sure their vent systems, disposal systems, building codes are all in order )

I prefer to shoot on private property, no rules on load, no buttholes to deal with, and every once in a while when i feel like wasting ammo i can rapid fire without a warnng from the range master. my advice is to befriend people with land out in the country. there is a range in oklahoma city h and something. the guys were just condescending and if you didn't have a kimber or worked on your own firearms you were an idiot. their prices are too high as well. if you don't know anyone with land, try to find a county range or one outside of town they are generally nicer people.

Sounds like Larrys Pistol and Pawn in Huntsville AL. really nice people (to avoid doing business with) And there are at least 2 local gunshops that have the standard "we are cooler than everyone else...why do you want this?....why do you want that?" BS attitude

I've never understood that part of the "gunshop god" sub-culture...I try to treat people like I'd want to be treated...it seems like a simple idea. Maybe it will catch on ;)

Because I'm the customer...that why!

I certainly admire your self-control. Unfortunately this behavior is observed at many ranges and gun shops. Sadly, if I were in your shoes I'd be incarcerated while the gentleman at the range would be enjoying hospital food...through a straw:fire:

Reason I quit going to Sherwin Shooting (formerly Big Bore Specialties)...

New rule: "Our ammo ONLY" at waayyy beyong price gouging rates...
Winchester White Box .45ACP $19/50
WWB .45ACP at Wal-Mart $20/100

Or if you were a member @$300/year, you could use 1 commercial reloaders ammo, but they looked in the boxes to make sure you hadn't put other ammo in the reloader's boxes.

This was almost 2 years ago, and I haven't been back. Called about 6 months ago, same rules. They made the switch to new rules without any advance notice; when you showed up to shoot, you couldn't without buying their ammo. I was the third person to walk out that day.

Almost makes you want to file a complaint with the ATF, mind you, you would have to seriously anger me to do that and I think your incident would be close to those grounds (I have a low tolerance for stupid people, especially when they are in my face cussing me out ).

That's H&H Gun Range owned by Miles Hall. It is the largest gun dealer in the OKC area. The sales people used to be as described and some still are. It's getting better. Their prices are in line with or in some cases a few % higher than other gun shops in OKC but are still on average about 75% of MSRP except on guns that are in short supply (like M1A's).

There was a time when the ventilation on their ranges just plain didn't work well (my blood lead level climbed to 15 when I shot there - it took two years for it to go back down below 1). They're always amazed when I give back the free range time card they give you when you buy a gun there. I explain why and they hem and haw and explain how there never was a problem but if there was it's been fixed.

Still if you're in OKC - H&H is a pretty good place to go even if it is just to browse.

wow sounds like theses guys are real *******s with no customer services skills. i would have gone directly to the owner instead of dealing with the manager or any of the staff.

not to defend these people or anything, and i doub this is the case there, but the indoor range next town over forces you to use their ammo because of the zoning restrictions. I live in a commie state/county, and apprarntly the only way they would do a range was to have it created as a "club", charge $500 a year, and make you use their overpriced ammo.

Some of it may have to do with liability insurance if someone is using overcharged handloads and blows a gun up and injures a bystander.

Other than that, their house, their rules, although they could have been more even keeled in their response.

This sounds like possibly a substance abuse situation. Meth-heads do a lot of crazy stuff. I've also heard that lead poisoning affects people's behavior and mental state. A real possiblity for people who are around flying lead and spent primer gasses all day every day.

Something to keep in mind. Taking your membership elsewhere is the right thing to do regardless.

The range is the Firing Line indoor ranges in Northridge CA.

At first when I read your post I thought you might be full of it, but then...

I should have known. I've been there and received equally bad treatment. They are the most arrogant crap infested range I've ever been too. Having been to the Agoura range, that's saying a lot.

If you can stick with Angeles or Oak Tree. Both have great Ranges and great people.

I SERIOUSLY doubt that guy was a former cop.

There's always more to these situations.

I've worked customer service my professional life and as one behind the counter, I'd like to add some other thoughts to this thread.

Were there other customers around you during the discussion about ammo prices? Most likely there would've been some gun noobs listening in and adding more flame to the fire. I think there's more to this story.

Also, you don't know HOW many types of gun nuts enter my range. I get them all from the place. I treat every one fair, but become more sensitive to newbies. Newbies already have premonitions about guns and I wouldn't want them to develop any bad habits. Especially for one turning other customers away.

I'm just saying that there had to be some other discussion that happened in between. Not all humans are bad, they're just misunderstood.

NO

Three guys did walk in but our conversation was over. Still NO excuse for the behavior. Even if they were standing right behind me listening to every word. No Excuse for the behavior.

I'm just saying that there had to be some other discussion that happened in between.

NONE Absolutely NONE.

"Not all humans are bad, they're just misunderstood."

that isn't an exscuse for cussing someone out over a conversation, and i DON'T care WHAT the conversation is about. ESPECIALLY not in a place of business. people who take their problems out on other people for no reason is never something to be exscused or condoned.
