Said I'd never do it..promised myself I wouldn't...

Ordered a Hi-Point Carbine over the weekend. I had been looking for a 9mm carbine and decided on going with an AR platform and building it over time....so meantime...

I now have a boat anchor to play with. 10 round "high capacity" magazine and all lol.

Anyone have anything good to say about them? They get surprisingly good reviews and are said to be accurate and very reliable. I plan on using reloads with plated bullets until I can get some casting equipment set up to keep costs down.

Plan on using 115gr over some unique. Wish I could find better powders down here.

Take it out and shoot it then report back. You'll probably find, like most, why they are so well liked by people that have actually shot them.

That's what talked me into buying one. They aren't very common down here, at least in my experience. My only gripe, without holding it, is the anemic magazine. All of the other stuff can be fixed or dealt with. Promag sells a 15 round mag but apparently they can cause damage to the gun that is not covered under warranty.

I'm thinking about leaving it open sighted but a red dot would probably do really well on one.

Keep an eye on the channel that the striker firing pin rides in. If the firing pin has any burrs or rough edges it can chew up the walls of the channel. Other than that, not much to go wrong with them.

Mine is 10 years old and nary a problem. Fun plinker with a 4X Burris scope.

DO NOT USE THE PRO MAG Mags, they stink.

Nice! The only thing holding me back from a Hi Point carbine in either 9mm or .40 S&W is the very limited magazine capacity. I sure wish Hi Point would make a double stack model with 18-20 round magazines, maybe more.

I tell people who are looking at them on my table that "they do everything any self respecting gun should do, except look cool"

They tend to be stupid accurate and ridiculously reliable ( with FACTORY mags anyway ), and too me anyway, the first gen guns shoulder and point very very well, waaay better then they look like they will!!

They were designed during the AWB when all new guns were limited to 10 rounds, and they haven't changed the basic mechanics of it since.

I bought mine when Billy boy was in the White House, thinking they would be next on the chopping block and I would make a nice buck on it , :banghead: well at least I could get my money back on it , I might have 200 rounds through it , never a jam and that ugly duck hits where I aim it ,

Nothing wrong with them and given their price point they are a great value. I had 1 in 9mm that I sold when I was in a Jeep craze.... wish I could have that lil gun back. May have to buy another one day. Not the prettiest gun out there, but works great, you dont worry about blemishes, and a lot of fun at 100 yards and less.

I've seen first time shooters at a pistol range making one hole groups off hand with a laser attached.

I traded for one 2 years ago. It was old and dirty. Stripped it down and realized it needed a new stock, so I called Customer Service. They walked me through a detailed inspection of the internals and sent me a new firing pin, spring, stock, and some other odds and ends for free. Then they called two weeks later to see how it shot.

This one was manufactured in the 90's. Has the older stock. Yeah, it's ugly, but it shoots. Eats all my cast bullet reloads without issues. Trigger is heavy, but once you get a feel for it, it's manageable. Great way to shoot on a budget. It's now my trunk gun for long trips.

Not sure if you got the new or old version, but if older, get yourself an ATI stock for it. You will love the difference. Unfortunately, I don't think the new ones fit into the ATI stock, although there probably is a Youtube vid on how to do it.

Mine is a performer,,,

Mine is a performer,,,
But it is the ugliest rifle known to man.

The only rifle anywhere near as ugly as the tactical stock version,,,
Is the first generation of the carbine.

It was jokingly called the Planet of the Apes carbine.

But looks beside,,,
Mine doesn't jam and hits to point of aim.

It's one of the best bargains in the gun world.

I've had my .40S&W Hi Point for 10+ years now and never a single problem out of it. Yes a fully functional higher capacity magazine would be nice to have. They are fugly but very reliable and accurate. I reload and use Berrys plated bullets and they run fine.

My .45 is a hoot to shoot.
Just remember the firing pin acts as the ejector so don't manually cycle live rounds thru it. I use dummy rounds for function checks.
I have seen the ATI stocks for the 9mm at Ace Hardware.

I use dummy rounds for function checks.

I did as you say and tested function on my first loads I ever made for my 995. They wouldnt eject worth a darn! Took me a few minutes to realize what was going on. I have always made dummies without any primer. Seated spent primers in them, problem gone.

My buddy had one of of the original stock 995's several years ago. He had it for sever years then it got stolen. Anyway, good gun. Ugly but it went bang every time and it hit what we aimed at. Insurance reimbursed him for the stolen goods and he got a 45 acp with the new stock. I haven't shot it yet but I think I like the feel of the older stock better. But that's just me. Either way good gun!

It's rare to hear of so many positive comments and so few negative comments. Will the gun group less than 3" at 50 yards?
