I have been wanting a .40 compact for CC for a long time and purchased this M&P today. Since I am a Glock and XD owner, I had reservations about the M&P pistols. The price was $439 and along with the rebates, I thought I would get off the fence and finally buy one. Good, bad, or so-so? Tell me what you think. I'll let you know what I think in a week or so.

Hope you like it as well as I like my M&Ps. Aside from the .357sig models (I haven't seen them anywhere in my area yet), the .40c is the only one I'm missing, so I can't really comment on it.

Keep us posted on how you like it. It's always nice to have opinions from folks that own multiple polymer platforms.

congrats, good addition to the family of poly guns you have there. please tell us how you like it, and how it works out for you. you could make an awesome comparison thread between the xd, glock, and m&p.

My M&P 40c has been flawless. It replaced my SIG P239-DAK as my small carry. Something I never thought any pistol would do.

The M&P is the first gun I've really fallen for after Sigs. I had one, agreed to sell it before I even shot it. The buyer let me shoot it and I had to have one. I just picked it up last night. I really like it. The guy I sold the M&P to the first time just bought a .40c. He's very happy.

Thanks fellas. It worries me when I here "even if you have problems initially", but I do have faith in S&W if I do. I haven't shot it yet but hoping to in the next few days. I hope that it will be just as reliable and enjoyable as the G26 that it may replace as my main CC pistol.

The reason you are getting that response is two-fold:

1.) The compact models, particularly the 40c, have had the most problems. Mostly with the mag release.

2.) People like to boast about good customer service.

I can tell you that out of the four that I own, the only one that has given me a problem is the 9c. I had a problem with my mag release. The customer service was top shelf, from initial phone call to the returned product.

Don't worry...be happy. :D

I have the M&P .40 full size, not the compact, but I absolutely love it. Hope you have as much fun with yours as I've had with mine :)

Anxious to hear your feedback. I'm still on the fence. At least there's more room up here without you on it too. :D

Well I took my new M&P forty to the range today and was really impressed. I shot a hundred rounds of Blazer brass 180gr. and 4 mags of Winchester Ranger 180gr. The pistol shot really great, but as expected from a compact it does have a little bite. I did not have any problems with mags falling out, or any of that stuff. I had one stoppage with the Blazer ammo, but this happened when shooting one-handed and probably my fault. The trigger of this pistol was a concern of mine at first, but felt was ok when shooting. I don't think the reset is a short as my Glocks, but maybe I am just more use to them.

I also took a couple of my Glock buddies as comparison. I brought my G23 since it is the only .40 that I have to compare to. I then shot several mags of the Bazer brass. Well the M&P felt like it had a little more perceived recoil, but the grip is more comfortable, resulting in a little better grouping than the Glock. Neither pistol is what I would consider to be a fun gun to shoot more than a hundred rounds, or so, at a time. Next I shot my G26 and it is a real pussycat to shoot compared to the M&P .40. I shot 150 rounds of blazer 115gr. and could have shot several hundred more. I bet the M&P 9mm would be a joy to shoot also.

All in all, the M&P is a really nice pistol that I should be happy with. Only time and many more rounds will tell.

i just got a M&P full size 40 last week i LOVE the gun it feels great and love the trigger. i want a 357 sig barrel for mine to make mine complete for range shooting but i have carried mine a little in the past week nice gun.

Rokman, I just must rent a compact M&P in .40. I had so much fun with a full sized one at a rental range that I want to try the compact.

You will have less recoil with yours when you shoot 165 grain bullets. Whether it really matters is up to you.

I've got a M&P .40c that I've put about 1000 rounds thru so far. It is my everyday carry gun and I'm confident that it's reliable enough to carry. To be fair I did have to send it back to Smith for a couple of things (the mag release being one of them). As has been stated in other posts above the customer service was what it should be with any manufacturer, top notch.

Bart, the recoil isn't really that bad, I just don't want to shoot a couple hundred rounds in one range trip. The reason for the 180 grainer is that I bought a ton of Blazer brass at $7.57 per 50round box. That stuff just went up about 5 bucks at my favorite Wally World stores. I also have quite a bit of Winchester Rangers in 180 and 155 grain. I'll experiment with a few different hollowpoint ammos.
