Im not sure how the Brady bunch made this scorecard, but some of the States arent where they should be. Obviously Vermont and Alask should be higher because they dont require a license to conceal carry. Idaho only requires it inside city limits. Maybe, like another poster suggested, its based on obtaining firearms.

I agree. We can't, at the same time, bash the Brady Campaign for being illogical and take their scorecard as being accurate.

Take another look at this scorecard. The Brady Bunch says specifically that this scorecard is about states that are doing the most/least in their opinion to combat "illegal gun trafficking" whatever that is.

So, things like concealed vs open carry etc don't matter as much.

They are trying to argue for the end of private gun transactions both at gun shows and away from them.

Understanding their motivation for these scores is important.

They know they are losing the concealed/open carry battle so they have changed their fight to the private transactions.

Do NOT make the mistake of underestimating their ability to spin BS.

At the risk of sounding a bit paranoid.... It's not a coincidence that the AHSA types have appeared again here at THR with their arguments against gun shows.

They want to drive a wedge between gun owners so that they can deal with this supposed "loophole" and outlaw all private firearm sales. It's also why the posts with stuff like "AK47s are not for hunting" will pick up here and other gun boards.. That had quieted down for a bit but they are getting frustrated that Obama hasn't done much so they are gearing up for a big fight for outlawing private transactions.

just went on their website and looked at their rating system.... in reality, they should change their name to:

the brady campaign to prevent gun ownership

If you look at the numbers, they do correlate well with decreased gun ownership. They don't correlate at all with homicide rate, violent crime rate, or percent of murders usng guns.

Here's my point: Don't be lulled into a false sense of comfort just because your state scored low on the Brady scorecard. I think I'll always have a healthy distrust of any state government. I'm a bit jaded, but it's not my fault.

Exactly. One of my best friends just got his concealed-permit in Louisiana and had to have 3 notarized documents including one from his doctor!
I think that is an insane breach of privacy. Here in Colorado, even though we rank higher, getting your CHP is quick and easy as long as you take the course and have a clean background.

CT has 53 points!!!! :grits teeth: Then again with all of the arbitrary gun control laws we have in CT I'm not shocked. Can't have a Colt AR 15, but you can buy a Bushmaster, Stag Arms etc. Can't have an AK chambered for 7.62x39, but you can have it in any other caliber.... go figure.

YES!!!! Hoosiers at 6 pts!!! Sounds like our IU basketball games....Only with
the Brady's scoring, thats a good thing....Bob Knight where are you?

I heard our score of 11 on the radio the other day. I was pretty happy with that but we still got one star. We have more guns in this state than we have people. What do we have to do get a lower score?

Indiana is " this close to getting a "parking lot" bill with post-Katrina protection as a side benefit and also " this close getting the handgun license database off limits to prying eyes.

I expect an even worse score next year!

How cute, they even have those little stars like the ones teachers use in elementary school.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence needs to change their name to The Brady Campaign to Promote Violence. I mean, CA is their favorite state, yet it also has the highest number of total gun murders every year. Not to mention a frighteningly high violent crime rate per capita. The numbers don't lie.

Many consider Utah to be a more “rural” state, but an examination of violent crime rates in some major cities reveals some facts that the Brady Bunch gun-grabbers would prefer you didn’t know.

Reports of violent crimes submitted to law enforcement for the first six months of 2009 (Latest available):

Berkeley, California (pop. 101,170): 310
West Jordan, Utah (pop. 105,772): 72

Elizabeth, New Jersey (pop. 124,823): 599
West Valley, Utah (pop. 124,128): 256

Lowell, Massachusetts (pop. 110,136): 553
Provo, Utah (pop 119,189): 76

I could keep going with this, however, I think you get the idea.

Look at population density instead of gross population.

(person per sq mi according to city-data.com)

Berkeley, California (9692): 310
West Jordan, Utah (2467): 72

Elizabeth, New Jersey (10208): 599
West Valley, Utah (3487): 256

Lowell, Massachusetts (7523): 553
Provo, Utah (2992): 76

Neverwinter brings up an interesting angle. I have no doubt that population density causes folks to become edgy, and could be part of the whole equation here. Nonetheless, I would rather be armed in a densely populated pile of edgy humans.
