Looks like with the server change my post got lost.

A friend gave me several shotguns because he isn't into guns at all.
(and I am)
But my area is handguns. So please forgive my noob-ness in this area.

One of the shotguns is a Browning about all it says on it is "Browning" & "Twenty".
Am I to assume that it's a 20 ga?
I don't have any 20 ga shells to check it.

The serial # is 5 digits 141xx. Someone posted a link to a sight that said it was from 1924? If that sight can be posted again I'd appreciate it.

Hmmm I guess the new server doesn't post thumbnails like the old one.
By the way, that's me & my Dad in the military photos in the background on the last pic.

The site I posted is Proofhouse.com and from what it says, it was made in 1924

Nice Superposed - there should be other markings and proofs somewhere on the gun, most likely underneath where you take the barrels off - the forearm does NOT come off separately from the barrels - it is an integral unit - you open the latch and then slide forearm and barrel assembly forward to take off

It is not made in 1924 and it is not a Superposed!

Browning Auto 5 Light Twenty 20ga, 2 3/4" shells only

Made first in 1958, there is more to your serial, there should be another number followed by a letter G

It is at least a 1966 and later model, flat knob began in mid-66, and they went back and forth over a series of a couple hundred guns, I have one dated earlier than the other and it is flat, second is round, I had another 66 that was dated prior to the first and it too was round knob.

The barrel will have most all of the info needed, should have a Belgium address, smooth bore, slug/deer barrel, barrel is probably 22" IIRC.

PS, you have a hell of a friend!

Orphan:
There is no G anywhere an the gun.

In front of the trigger is a "loading area"?
in front of that, toward the barrel, is the serial number.
Please see attached drawing.

Other text on the barrel says:

BROWNING ARMS COMPANY ST LOUIS Mo & MONTREAL PQ
Made in Belgium

On the other side of the barrel (which I missed before)

says:

SPECIAL STEEL - 20 GAUGE - SHELLS 2 3/4"

Ok - thank you for the clarification!

And yes, I do have very good friends :D

Most likely I'll sell most of the guns they gave me & give them the money.

He's unemployed right now & she's working 3rd shift for just over minimum wage (with 3 kids - one in Afghanistan, & one 7th grade & one in 5th grade).
