Should a bug-out stronghold be a plainly visible stronghold that is fortified or something less that is hard to see?

We are looking at buying a camp on an island about 1000 yards from the edge of our hunting lease. The island is about 120 ft by 400 ft with 2 camps on it, one livable and the other needs some work. The island has a bulkhead, which is about 6-8 in. above the island surface. The bulkhead is made of ¾” iron plate toung & grove and an outer pvc bulkhead which should be kind of a wall premier that should give some protection. From the top of the camp you can see every means of approach for at least 1000 yards on up to about 6 miles. Add a towering deer stand and put someone in there with a large rifle and you could sink a boat from a long distance and let the gators take care of survivors. The camps have 30,000 and 40,000 gal water systerns, which collect rain from the tops of the camps so water is not an issue. What do you guys think?

For a stronghold, you would want something less visible.

It sounds like it is ina secluded place already? but it may prove helpful if someone walks by they would never notice it.

Always better to avoid a fight even if you can take em. Better not to take the risk.

Yes, but its rather unlikely they would come by in a boat to a small island.

You can make yourself a highly visable bada$$ target or a very difficult to see bada$$ target.

Im just musing though, just something to think about.

I think keeping it setup for quick camping trips or last minute TEOTWAWKI scenerios is a great idea.
Keep a cache of a couple milsurp rifles, like Mosin Nagants, and some ammo, and some fishing gear including nets, and you're set. Plus, it would be a great place to go have a fun time.
Other things to keep around would include tools and first aid gear. Grow some wild fruits and vegetables on the island, and maybe on the nearby hunting lease, too.

yeah being safe from boats is one thing, planes is another......

it sounds great as long as no one approaches by air

Your best security is being concealed.

If you have something (food, water, shelter, etc, etc) that others want or need you will eventually find there are more "others" than you have ammo.

And even if you have unlimited ammo and never need sleep, the stench from being surrounded by rotting corpses will drive you out.

I don’t know what you are expecting but my first thought was "I bet a couple of guys could slip in on them in the dark". It might make a good place for a low intensity SHTF kind of place, if you have dogs to help watch, but if its TEOTWAWKI, everybody will know that you are there and want what you got.

Other thoughts were:

How are you going to hunt? If one or two go to the mainland to hunt they will be easy targets.

What if a couple guys just walked in shots from the shore while others approached from a raft etc?

How would you bug-out from your bug-out location?

It may be a good place to weather an event, provided that you make the proper plans, but there is no such thing as a "Stronghold".

It would be a great defensive position, but remember it cuts you off just as much as the bad guys. If something happens to your boats, you are gonna be screwed. Game will be limited (well non existant), as well as a very limited crop growing area-but that dosent mean you wont get by, just a thought as this would probably be more a base, with other locations on the mainland. A building of some sort would be difficult to make due to the weight/size of materials, as well as the high water table. Also remember that even from 1000 yards, a milsurp or hunting rifle can easily kill/penetrate-but an ambush would be a hell of alot tougher.

If you make something menacing and flashy looking, it might keep out people of one mindset. However, there is the other group of people with the mindset of taking you over and using your nice cozy fort for themselves. I'd try to blend in as much as possible into the environment.

If someone has access to a small plane in such a situation, they're probably pretty well off since it would state they have regular access to a reasonably lengthy runway (makeshift or real) and fuel. A helicopter is a bit different, but your camp must look extraordinary tasty and worth their time, fuel, and effort for them to consider you a target.

All you "bug out" folks just keep this in mind.

Where ever you plan on "bugging out" to, it will already be populated by folks like me who already live out here.

I'm so far down a dirt road that good friends and relatives who've visited me before have gotten lost.

We live out here. We know the land. We're often very independent minded, and self-sufficient. That's why we live out in the boondocks where we can't even see a neighbor's house, even if we try to.

In other words, we "bugged out" by our choice of where to live a long time ago.

Even national forests and parks are already ringed by folks like me who live out in the woods, and even though they don't "own" the national forest, they probably know the national forest as well as city dwellers know the sidewalks right around their own house or apartment.

Chances are, we're gonna get a whole lot of really nice, new survival gear from those urban folks who're "bugging out" to our backyards. Especially when all these folks start showing up around our place in 4WD vechicles.

:D

It might be a real good idea to get to know some folks who already live out in the the "bug out" places. Otherwise, we might not take too kindly to armed strangers showing up, especially if there is some sort of real national emergency happening.

What do I think?

Corregidor. Wake Island. Guadalcanal. Tarawa. Iwo Jima. Okinawa and a host of other islands that fell.

Ummm...

I think I'll stay at home in my lazyboy, what with the quad fifties mounted on the roof, who's gonna come lookin for me???? :D

Seriously, if I was making a bugout place, it wouldn't be on a island. Island for fun and enjoyment of family...good. Island for "bugout"...bad. Once your there your trapped and can not effectively strategically retreat or manuever beyond the edges of the island.

"Bugging out" to me means living life on the move, constantly moving to avoid being detected and engaged.

Maybe i'm wrong, but I'm gonna go find hillbilly's place when the excrement meets the rapidly oscilating cooling device.

I agree with Hillbilly on that one,Country boys know just about every twig on every tree, and every path or road as well as the hills and mountians like the backs of our hands.

Just be real friendly to the folks you SEE when you're passing by (Because the rest will be watching you through either open sights or scopes)

Play nice kids.

Hey Thereisnospoon.

Just let me know you're coming, okay?

And bring lots of ammo and even more food.

A stronghold is generally built someplace where it:

a) defends some precious localized resource
b) allows a secure location for rest of patrols that exert control over a wide area containing a distributed precious resource

Incidentally, #b was generally the reason for medieval castles.

In end-of-the-world situation, your primary concern would be sustenance. Thus limiting yourself to a location makes sense only if that location provides the sustenance. Hence, unless we consider the hunting grounds as a precious distributed resource, there seems to be little point in having the stronghold in the first place.

While the foolhardy storm your firing fields and get mowed down, the really dangerous are the smart. Your entire garrison can be completely isolated, killed off, and/or starved to death by a single sniper.

A good stash in a well-hidden small cave or underground cabin in an area you are well familiar with would be a far better investment, IMO.

Finally, this discussion also brings up a common weakness with the plans of most city dwellers (myself included) - we always think about gear and transportation, but somehow remain completely oblivious of things like what area we are going to bug out to and what our long-term sustenance would be there.

Secret Handshake

hillbilly

is there a secret handshake or something I should know?

I'll be the redneck from Ala. with the M1A and lots of ammo in a blue minivan, er, urban assault vehicle...

(go figure!)
