Building the perfect beast...has this happened to you?

Well...maybe. One thing it ain't is cheap. Work up a batch of 40, pay your range fees and drive to the range only to find your new load is less than expected is a big letdown and a bunch of money wasted. Not a total loss; at least you get to shoot. But I consider it frustrating, to say the least.

I have lots of partial boxes/containers of stuff that has never “clicked” in anything but that doesn’t keep me from buying stuff to try them in. ;)

What is the goal? A target load, hunting, ? If the search is frustrating, stop and just buy stuff that works to begin with. Life is too short to be PO’ed, “for fun”.

For a 7mm Mag or 7-08? Maybe @LoonWulf can help you out?
Buddy if mine just came by and cleaned me out of 7mm 160 speers. Lemme see if hes actually gonna use em all. I also have some 162 pre balistic tip Noslers that performed similarly.

I use generic loads as starting points, I also dont generally change my powder when switching bullets within a weight/construction class....thus i can work up a new load with 20rnds or so.

He actually clarified that it's for a 357 Mag revolver and rifle. Sorry. I saw 160gr and carbine and thought it was for a 7mm rifle.

He referenced the 146 gr bullet as well. Those were the old half jacketed bullets Speer offered in the 70’s and 80’s. The 146 was a hollow point SWC and the 160 was a flat point SWC.

Yup. I cut my teeth on those. Sometimes things fade away because time and progress replaces them with something better. Sometimes “better” is a one-sided proposition and that’s sad.

Either way, it’s not that hard to find replacements and with a little effort - research, testing, time and money - the replacement surpasses the original.

The Speer 135gr GDHP driven to the limit of its velocity curve is a good bullet for light game like our Florida Whitetail. The 170gr DC is even better but, alas. It seems Speer is reworking the Deep Curl plated bullet line and the 170gr is no more.

I am not that great of a reloader or chooter to notice, and I cannot think of a box of factory stuff that is any more available that would improve my scores. I am sure my scores will improve if I would practice or Beast Build. Last box of bullets I bought were 30-40 Krag and I shot the factory stuff for the brass.

I currently have 5+ loads for my main 38 bullet a noe-154-rnfp in 38 and 357. My dad did not have a reloading journal, and I'm stuck with the labels on loads he did make. So now I test every powder I can get and make a list of what works, so when junior is in the driver's seat he can pat himself on the back for improving what I've started. In your situation I'd be testing 3-5 loads at once due to the travel and entry expenses. For me I normally test one load at a time in three different guns because junior likes to shoot diffrent ones. I'm still working on 357 every trip but 6.5x55 is also currently on deck. Here is last Saturday 20240127_171620.jpg

I started reloading during the pandemic. That means I rarely found the same components twice. I have similar loads with a variety of components. I’m trying now to settle down and get a stash of the components that work best. It’s working, but I also know if I need to I can substitute components.

Most of the calibers that I load for are easy to find good loads for and matching the performance of a "Pet" load would be frustrating but not too hard. I try to stay stocked up and probably have enough bullets to wear out the barrels on my 22-250AI and 243 Winchester. I do miss the discontinued Sierra .257 100 grain soft points. I only have a few hundred of them left. But I don't shoot that rifle very much, so there is that.

But most of my best loads can be replaced with other components that are available. I try to not spend too much time working up loads for rifles that have a short barrel life.

Powder Valley had 4 lb containers available this morning.
You must have caught a blip in availability. When I checked at around 9:30AM EST BD was OOS in every size. I checked it and Red Dot specifically. RD has been MIA for over a year. Not sure what the deal there is. I may just be missing the in-stock blips before it gets claimed.

Actually click on the product and select size. They were showing no stock on Re22 last night because 4 and 8# sizes were out by when I selected 1# it changed to in stock so I ordered it and the order processed.

Ah! I see! Yes, I was looking specifically for 1# - which are OOS - but I see now that 4# BD and 8# RD are in stock. Thanks!
@AJC1 - Blue Dot on PV in 4# jugs! Available and waiting for you.

I buy smaller quantities typically but I may have to bite the bullet and get a big size. A pound of RD will last me a few years. I’m down to one or two, I think. Three on-hand would be nice. 10# on-hand along with the rest of my powder stock would be ridiculous.

I've become awfully fond of blue dot, using cardboard cans scrounged up by a friend.... it will be a sad day when I'm out.
I like Blue Dot especially in the magnums it performs very well in them but you do have to push it closer to the mid and upper end of the data where it burns very clean . I have been using it for 28 years but now am having problems finding it l tried Long Shot but didn’t like it. Trying Enforcer right now seems to work quite well I am thinking of trying W572 as it is similar.

If Enforcer isn’t on the shelf, Accurate 4100 is the same powder, different label.

I may have to get the 4# df BD at Powder Valley. It’s about the best thing I’ve found for the .44Spl using under 240gr cast.

What velocities are you looking for? I've been using Unique in reduced .44 magnum loads for quite some time now with 240gr Berry's plated bullets with great results for paper punching. I probably use more Unique than any other powders combined with all kinds of loads, both pistol and rifle.

I’m using a Bull-X 190gr. BNWC over 11.5gr Blue Dot w/ a CCI 300 primer (standard, not magnum). That’s a tack-driver making around 800 and 900fps (respectively) from my 3” and 6” Tauruses - Mdl. 43 and Mdl. 44.

It’s also my go to for a few .357Mag loads with heavier bullets, along with No.9 and 4100.

But mostly it’s my favorite for .45Colt and .44Mag heavies.

Interesting...I am using the Unique in both of those loads. The .45LC loads are super accurate.

Have you reloaders stumbled across the 'perfect' load for your particular gun(s), only to find one or more of your critical components has been discontinued, or is not available? And how do you deal with it? Start over using similar components and go through the whole testing process again? Throw up your hands and buy factory ammo? Do tell.
When this happens, I start again developing a new load that will mimic the performance of the previous load.

Many years ago, IMR-4198 ceased to be available. I developed a new load for my 223 rounds yielding (essentially) identical performance at 200 meters using IMR-3031. When it, too, "disappeared", I went with Winchester 748. So far, I have been able to acquire at least one of these powders when I needed it.

Sounds like n133 and n135 would fit your load well if you want a non hogden option.
