Hey folks. If someone was in the market for a Garand, just as a solid, pretty accurate shooter; not interested in collector value, would the best bet be to wait for the CMP rifles to come back in stock, or buy the issue grade or premium grade from Garand Guy?

I can't really find any ideas of what the CMP Garands would cost when they come back in stock... anyone have any ideas?

Go ahead and get one from the Garand Guy. If/when the CMP has more Garands they will be built up from parts anyway, just like what the Garand Guy does. Rumor has it that they will be in the $900 range from CMP. Tony(The Garand Guy) is a good guy, and he will stand behind any Garand he builds, buy with confidence.

CMP has a limited amount of Service Grades they will be selling at the North Store for $595. This will probably be the price when they become available for mail order in the fall or winter. I got a SG last year ($550) which would have been a correct grade as it was in excellent condition but mismatched bolt, trigger group, and receiver. I've seen SG with crappy wood so that would add $100-150 to your cost.

If you can't wait get one from Tony, he's a honest businessman and I would be surprised if you were disappointed dealing with him. If anything isn't exactly right he'll fix it. I've met him and I've never heard anything bad about him.

P.S. Better yet get one from Tony now and get one from CMP later.

Well I'm going to wait for CMP and see what their prices are...

If I can get a Service Grade for 600 or so I would be very happy... if not, Garand Guy will still be there.

EDIT: Anyone know if the prices Garand Guy lists for his rifles includes shipping?

Also.. if I wound up getting the Issue Grade from Tony, would that be sufficient for my needs? How much accuracy am I losing by having Barrel Gauging of 4 to 5 instead of 2 to 3? Keep in mind I just want to use this for target shooting, nothing like Competition or anything like that.

None, zero, zip, nada. The muzzle wear is the determining factor for accuracy. Chamber erosion (which is what the numbers refer to) will just give you a general idea of how many rounds have been through the barrel. A new barrel will generally gauge from one to three, and will increase by one full increment about (rough estimate) every thousand rounds thereafter.

Wrong question.... You should be asking how much LIFE is left in the barrel.

USGI Armorers were required to pull a barrel and replace it when the TE reached a gauge reading of "10"

Any unit going overseas for possible combat duty were issued rifles with TE under 5. Any rifle gauging between 5 and 10 were reserved for stateside duty units.

As stated.... all other things being equal, you will not notice an accuacy difference between 2 and 5 on a TE gauge. Muzzle wear is much more important to accuracy.

I recently purchased a Super Premium Garand from The Garand Guy. Shipping from New Jersey to California only cost $20.

I highly recommend Tony, The Garand Guy. He was extremely accomodating and great to work with.

I bought a premium grade from Tony at Garand Guy this year.

He is military friendly and a Korean War veteran. He is easy, quick, and PERSONABLE to deal with.

I was in your shoes last year. Get a CMP Garand and re-stock, re-barrel, and re-parkerize it...or buy a fine rifle from GarandGuy.com. I did the math, and found it more cost and time effective to buy one from Tony.

Go with Tony, you WILL NOT be disappointed!

Since we don't even know what the "new" prices from CMP will be, I'd say go with the Garandguy. You know he will send you a quality Garand. Never 100% sure what the CMP is sending you. No knock on the CMP, they have been great, but with the new pricing and out of stock issues, I'd say the better buy (talking quality, not price) would likely be from Garandguy.

I bought a premium grade from him a few months ago (as stated above ;) ).

Seeing how it's a brand new stock, the wood is immaculate with zero dings, dents or scrathes. Unlike many CMP Garands, all the wood matches and is an even, beautiful walnut.

All metal parts in my Garand appeared brand new, with zero burrs, cracks, or dents. His parkerization job was impressive.

You'll be hard pressed to find a better deal.

Oh, and by the way...she shoots great!

Does sound like a good deal...Did someone mention that CMP is just going to be parts rifles as well?

The #'s thing really bothers me, but if I'm not going to be able to find a rifle with all matching, then I might as well get one from garand guy that is brand new.

You won't get a "matching" Garand from the CMP unless it is a collector grade, and those are long one. They may have some on auction, but they go for BIG bucks....:what:

A "matching" Garand would be one with all the parts from the same manufacturer. A correct Garand would be one with all the same parts it had when it came from the factory, and those are few and far between. It takes an experienced eye to determine if an M1 is correct since there are no numbers to match, like on some foreign military arms.

The Garands that the CMP will be selling next will be parts guns with new commercial barrels and stocks and maybe a few other grades that will be all military, but mixmasters as well.

Cool. You guys convinced me, I'll just go with Garand Guy. I'd rather have a sure bet than roll the dice with CMP.

Though I may still buy a Carbine from them later on in the year.

Samuraigg,

I'd say if you can get to the North or South Store, CMP is a definite winner -- you can wander the racks and pick a winner. Mail order (when available) appears to be more of a crap shoot. I've been real happy with the two lowly field grades I picked up at the South Store, but looking at what was there, someone paid the same price for some really rough rifles.

While the drive to the North store wouldn't be impossible for me, by the time I factor in the cost of gas and lost time driving there, I think Garand guy would still be a better deal.
