Buying a Garand... Wait for CMP or use Garand Guy

Springfield makes one:

Sorry, not so.

The SA Inc. M1 rifle currently being marketed is not "new".

The receiver (Cast, not forged as the original USGI.), barrel, and wood are new manufacture parts. EVERY other part is old used or NOS military parts that have been re-finished to look new.

If all the parts on these "new" M1's had to be newly manufactured.... i.e. a completely new rifle in all it's parts..... the price would be well beyond what the market would bear.

Best to all,

After reading the Garand Guy's website, I couldn't stop giggling at his "grades." :D

Issue Grade
Premium Grade
Super Premium Grade
Super Colossal Premium Grade--"This is as good as it gets!!!!!"
Super Colossal Stupendous Premium Grade--"THIS IS ALSO AS GOOD AS IT GETS!"

:D

If I were in the market for a Garand, I'd buy from him.

The way that prices are getting for great M1 Garands, they are going through the roof. Typical. We know that the CMP had them low, CMP sold them at 12 per year, that kinda gets me mad because people who want a decent M1 will never get one now. You lost your chance at a decent price. Go gunbroker. Spend your money instead on an M1A

While I am mad that the Garand costs so much, I'm still very happy with my purchase. I've wanted a Garand my entire life and I will finally own one.

The M1A will probably be a purchase for me next summer.

While I am mad that the Garand costs so much....

Tell me about it. I'm kicking myself for selling off 10 of mine just before the prices started to skyrocket...talk about bad timing. Oh well, I needed the money for boring stuff like medical bills :(

Sorry Samuraigg, we're local and I probably would have had one you would have liked! And I'm keeping the few I have left ;)

Haha its ok. :)

I can't really kick myself for not buying a Garand sooner, since this is the first time ever that I have had the money and chance to buy one.

At least I got ahead of the curve by buying an SKS before prices possibly go up. :D

Garand Guy

I received my super premium grade m1 garand from the Garand Guy last week. Took it to the range immediately and the gas cylinder or gas valve on the op rod was out of spec. It would not cycle another round. I called Tony and he said to mail it back to him and he would make it right, and reimburse me for return shipping. Very helpful person and will buy from him again.

Cool. Good to hear he's helpful.

I still haven't heard back from him yet since placing my order Friday evening, but since its the weekend I'll try to be more patient. ;)

I think I'd have put the new kidney, or the chemo, or the cast on hold, but that's just me.

I'd probably live in a refrigerator box under a bridge for the winter before selling my Garand. I doubt my wife or kids would be too happy about that, but hey, I'd still have my Garand. :D

Ordering

He'll email you next with a tracking number. The information on your order is all he needs. He didn't spend alot of time on the new stock's finish. It had polyurethane applied and had some runs in it. I took some steel wool and dulled the wood. Afterwards, the stock looks perfect. I'm picky when it comes to wood stocks.

I just bought a garand from CMP last week and I am going to be ordering another in september when they open up again. Hopefully by the end of the year I will have 3 garands. I however have never purchased or heard of garand guy.

We'll I haven't faxed over my dealers FFL yet, so he's got to wait on that. I can't fax it in until Monday when I get to work. I just wanted him to email me to confirm he got the order ok.

Garand is shipping tomorrow. Hopefully it will get here before the end of the week. Woohoo! :D

In the meantime is there any "on the shelf" 30-06 ammo I could buy that would be Garand safe? I know its probably best to buy surplus ammo from CMP or elsewhere, but I would like to pick up a box or two of ammo from my gunshop to go to the range this weekend. Considering I just spend the cash on the Garand, I need to wait a week or two until I can order some bulk surplus ammo.

I'm thinking about buying up a Garand.

I take it the Garands from Garand Guy, Orion, etc are built with imported /repro parts? I notice their most expensive models say "all USGI", but not the lower cost models. I assume thats the main difference between these and one from CMP?

Thanks,
Joe

Not that the manufacturer will stand behind as being OK for the M1's gas system..... other than maybe Black Hills Match ammo.

None other that I would shoot in MY Garands anyway.... but, Hey, that's just me.

Well then I'm not going to risk it. I ordered 48 rounds of the M2 ball surplus from ammunition to go. That can tide me over for a quick trip to the range. :)

Re imported/repro parts: There are no repro parts for the M1 rifle excepting the receiver, wood, and barrel. I personally would not have an aftermarket receiver on an M1 if a USGI version was available. The GI's are forged, aftermarket, cast. With wood and barrels, however, aftermarket versions are available that are better than original GI. This is the way to go if you are wanting a shooter. If you want an all GI rifle though, original USGI parts are available.... and the Garand-Guy can fix you up if that's what you want.

Imported parts from Denmark and Italy are fairly common. There were LOTS of M1's that came back to the CMP from both Denmark and Greece that had Dane and Italian parts on them and umpteen thou parts kits that hit the open civilian market some years back that had bou-cou Dane and Italian made parts.

Quality of the Dane and Italian M1 parts is not an issue. They equal and in some cases exceed the quality of USGI parts. Danish made "VAR" barrels, for instance, are prized for accuracy and highly sought after by many guys who shoot in the CMP John C. Garand matches.

The only issue for some folks is that they don't want foreign marked parts on their M1 rifle.

It's up to you.....

Best,

Good info. Thanks Swampy.
I've got a C&R so its quite tempting to order one up directly from Garand Guy, thus bypassing the 10-day waiting period and depriving California of the $30 background check fee and sales tax:evil:

Just ordered a Super Premium in .30-06 from Garand Guy. We should get a THR discount or something, lol.
Gonna have to sell a few other C&Rs to cover it, but figured trading some comblock guns for one USGI is a good thing.

Still waiting for my order. He gave me a tracking number, but it wound up being an invalid number :(

Waiting for a new tracking number. I was hoping the gun would be here by today since it was supposed to ship on Tuesday, but no dice.
