Well, the one thing about the service grades is that they are currently all Greek returns, which means that you could get one that is not parkerized and instead some sort of blackish finish and/or one with a non Walnut stock such as European beech.

So if you wanted one for reenactments, then a CMP USGI Field Grade would be the best since you will get one that is still parkerized and has a Walnut stock. Of course, you could get the SG and get a replacement stock if necessary and/or reparkerize if necessary.

Non-Greek guns are no guarantee of getting a walnut stock. There are a lot of USGI Birch replacement stocks on the rebuilt CMP guns, and under $850 they are all rebuilt. It is hard for me to tell from a photo, but yours looks like a birch stock to me.

I got a US SG HRA long ago with walnut handguards and a birch butt stock. I think it looks terrible but it shoots like crazy so I'm not complaining. They are all good deals, but for the money I like the service grade.

Service grade is the way to start. You can always send it to Dean's Gun Restorations to make it look pretty!!

i just bought a USGI field grade back in september. it's super accurate and was in relatively good shape. i requested a WWII serial number and got a january 1944.

for the $50 or so over rack, i see no reason not to get a field grade.
