Hey guys.

I am currently on TDY at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. My home of record is Texas. I'll be here until April 29.

Well in the meantime I was thinking I might want to buy a gun while I'm here, but I have no clue about how to go about buying a gun out of state.

I heard that all I have to do is show my Military ID and a copy of my orders and I'd be good to go. Is that true?

Also, what about transfers? If I see a gun I like online (like Gunbroker), would the transfer process be just like buying it?

What's up with buying a gun out of state?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, if you're on TDY, your legal residence for the period of duty is the station to which you're assigned. If you go to a dealer with your ID and a copy of your orders, he processes your order and gets the background check done, using the copy of your orders as proof of residence. He has to file the copy of your orders with your Form 4473 for future reference, if any is needed.

Preacherman pretty much nailed it.

But, if all else fails then you could purchase the weapon and have it sent to your FFL back home. I have my FFL's phone number saved in my cell for just that reason. One call, and off goes the copy of his license in the mail. Gun will be waiting for you when you get home.
