Got my 10% off post card in the mail from Cabela's. Went to the store to buy some Xtreme reloading bullets. I read the fine print. Also saw there was a 5% off for pistols and ammo. Grab my product, present the card to the cashier and she says: "that'll be 5% off because it's ammo". I said "No, this is not loaded ammo...these are reloading bullets...should be 10% off". She calls over a more senior employee and he verifies her words. I repeated my explanation to him. All the while I'm very calm, not disrepectful, but standing my ground, staring at the 2 of them. I'm never rude to customer service people, they don't get paid enough to take guff from customers. As the line is growing longer behind me, he says "we can call over a manager". She groans and blurts out "OK... I can take care of this" and gives me the 10% off. I responded with a pleased and hearty thank you.
Anyone ever have this "bullets vs ammo" experience? What's your take?

No, never happened to me but the way things are today with less and less younger people shooting and all the anti-gun teaching going on I'm sure this will happen more in the future. They just won't know the difference.

Was wondering if that issue would arise where they tried to use a primer or other components as "ammo" to not have to give the 10%.

Components are not ammo so you were correct. The manager should have known better. While the parts make up ammo they aren't ammo. But everyone here knows this already.

I agree bullets are not ammo. I got the same post card the other day and did wonder if the 10% was good for bullets. Haven't tried it yet.

I was at the dundee store on Friday morning with my coupon. Grabbed 10k S &B primers, and I get the same thing from the clerk. I say exactly the same thing as you, and she says "ok, that makes sense!". Out the door I go with a smile :)

How do you guys get these discount coupons mailed to you? I've purchased from them in store, but that wouldn't have given them my mailing info. However, I've also ordered online using my info and picked up in store, so I'd think they have my info, since it had to be given during the ordering process.

I was in the Cabelas in Greenville SC last Fri. I had 2 boxes of .22 shells, 2 boxes of 250-- 230 gr Berrys round nose 45 bullets ( they were out of the 500 count boxes ), a reloading block ( I am too lazy to make my own out of wood ) and some 2 inch target dots. I also had the 5%/ 10% coupon. The clerk rung me up, and I asked about the two different % for two different uses. She asked if I wanted to use the 10% off part of the card, which I said yes. So she rang up the ammo for 5 %, and the rest of the purchase for 10 %. No problems.

Years ago I lived in Wisconsin, and went to a Cabelas in Illinois. The clerk would not sell me ammo because I was from out of state and did not have an Illinois FOID card. I politely asked for the manager, and the clerk was told that I could buy ammo, just not guns. So I lucked out both times. Just do not get me going on the hired help in Home Depot or Lowes.

HankC & Binrat...I had a friend whose wife was "pre-sorting" his mail! She envisioned him grabbing each flyer that came along and running down to the store for this 'n that. Hope you have no one "helping" you with your mail! They also sent me an email with the same 10%/5% offer. It had the bar code so the print out would suffice as well as the post card. If you want, PM me your email address and I can forward it to you. The offer is good for a few more days.

Giving the cashier the benefit of the doubt, before I started reloading, "bullets" and "ammo" meant the same thing to me. That's pretty common outside the reloading community. Sort of like clips vs magazines. All us smart guys know the differences. Glad you got your discount. Well done.

Bullets are ammunition in the way that tires are a car. Which is to say: they ain't.
