Just returned from Walmart and the employees at the counter wouldn't sell me or my buddy ammo without a California ID. I have an active duty Miltary Id and Hawaii drivers license but they wouldn't sell me anything. Does anyone know if this is the law in California or just a stupid Walmart rule?

I don't know much about California law... but I find it hard to believe that wal-mart wouldn't sell ammo to someone with a Military ID. That's just wrong!!!

Did they tell you why they wouldn't sell it to you?

I didn't have proof of residence with me. My insurance card that didn't have my address on it wasn't good enough even though it is current here.

Just for spit and giggles, I would be temptedto return in uniform. :D

"Look, my plane to Iraqistan leaves in forty-five minutes. May I please have a box of 9mm?"

Welcome to California! You should turn around and run while you have the chance. . . . . . take it from someone who never should have come back from Wyoming.

I just might do that tomorrow. I'm subscribing to AMERICAN handgunner tomorrow so when it comes in I can bring it down there with me next time. Unfortunately tomorrow I must carry my frikin cable bill with me.

Tell them under the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act (federal law) they cannot descriminate against you because your duty assignment is in California and it takes you away from your home state. Ask them if they want to be sued????

Sounds like a policy at that particular Wal-Mart.

I never had any problem buying ammo at my local Wal-Mart using a military ID. CA's laws on buying ammo really arent different than anywhere else. You gotta be 18 to buy rifle ammo and 21 to buy pistol ammo.

I would just try to find another Wally world that isn't as retarded, or go back when there is another clerk there. I never once got carded for ammo there.

If you are in San Diego, the Murphy Canyon/Aero drive store, the San Marcos/Nordahl store, and the Poway/Community stores all have ammo and 7 months ago when i still lived there, they had relatively intelligent people there. (But if you are going to San Marcos, you might as well go to Turner's across Nordahl.)

If you are at Los Al in Cypress, go to Turner's or Stockade/Fowler's.

If you are at Vandenberg, Irwin, China Lake, or whatever those two Oxnard bases are called, I don't know what to tell you.

Where are you?

I'm in San Diego. We went to the store down at the end of Palm Ave. I'm going back today with a couple utility bills and my copy of the gun paperwork and hope the same 2 are working.

It's for age thing, might be some dumb clerks out there.... Just bought some ammo at walmart, she didnt ask for ID I asked her she said honey I know your over 21.....thats all the register wants to really know...lol Way it should be, in out banm. done deal....

I am not sure where Palm is, (Southtown?) but I bet the Aero store isn't too far from you. It's just north of Qualcomm, take I15 and exit at Aero, turn left, then turn left at Murphy Canyon.

With the huge Murhpy Canyon military housing right across the freeway, that Wal-Mart sees Marines, sailors, etc in there pretty frequently. Park by the garden section and it's that much quicker.

Once you get done, you can check out American Shooting Center just south of MCAS Miramar.

Hopefully it works for you at the Palm store, but you should not have to provide that much documentation just to buy ammo.

If I am wrong and Palm is in Oceanside, then the San Marcos store is not too far at all, just head east on 78 and take the Nordahl exit, (Last one before I15.) Turn left over the freeway, Wal-Mart is left of Nordahl, Turner's is right. On your way back to Ocenaside, visit Ironsights by the airport, a very friendly range.

Good luck.

I was out there a few years ago when the National Judo Tournament was in San Diego. I stopped by the American Shooter's Center and wasn't overly impressed. It was kind of nice that there was a range that close.

You might try the Lakeside WalMart, too. I like the area east of San Diego a lot. It seems a tad bit more relaxed out there.

I live almost on the border to Mexico. There's a lot of Navy down here too. Maybe we scared the ladies at the counter. They did call the manager and he wouldn't accept the military id either. My wife offered to go for us, she doesn't have a California id either but she speaks spanish. I'll see how that works, if nothing else she has checks with our name and address printed on them.
My buddy that's here from Virginia has no problem bringing his guns out as long as he declares them when he checks in at the airport. He won't leave home without a couple of them.

I only have to deal with them a couple more times to get enough brass to start reloading myself. If I was a rich man I'd buy all of my ammo from the gun shop and not ever have to return to walmart.

Yeah not only do they usualy insist on ID but visual inspection is not good enough, and they must swipe the magnetic strip into thier computer. For some reason I just don't like having my ID swiped into a computer when purchasing ammunition. They don't do it for other things. Perhaps that is your real problem, that the local policy is to swipe your ID, and the military ID cannot be swiped by the machine designed around swiping (and recording purchases?) CA IDs. Makes you want to disable the magnetic strip

Welcome to California! hehehe

While I hate being here(job reason), I sure am taking advantage of the states better pay compared to else where.

I haven't had any trigger time in well over a year, why so long?

Sacrifice.
(NFA Mp5, yeah they're not cheap) End of Dec. I'll be able to pay it full.

Sure I could buy a butt load of EBRs but It's not as important to me.

Don't expect anything less from a society that knows nothing about firearms(freedom) and is filled with "gang mentality" expecting the government to take care of all there problems.

Also I figure Wal-mart doesn't want the bad press or law suit when some gang banger or wacko commits the next crime near by. I dunno, just my fodder.
