TexasRifleman...

I'm not sure of your purpose...but deliberately misquoting, revising a post after someone comments on it, and your twisting of my post leave me with little desire to continue this "debate".

If it makes you feel better...chalk this one up as a 'win' for you on your tally, I'll concede, you're right.

Whether the teachers themselves are anti or pro gun is not the issue here.

I am in Ft Worth, and I know several teachers with CHLs too. These same teachers have said it is school policy to report ANY student talking about, drawing, writing about, etc firearms.

My purpose is to refute your statement that this kind of thing just doesn't happen in public schools.

You posted that the "hang em all" crowd would be along soon.

So that places anyone that has seen this happen in a public school in the "hang em all" crowd?

Well I disagree with your statement very much that this doesn't happen.
Note your glee when it was posted that the OP's incident happened in a private school.

My story did happen, and it was in a public school.

So there's no debate, you are simply incorrect in asserting that public schools do not directly engage in anti gun behavior. I'm glad the one you work at doesn't, but that is not generally the case. I'm glad you have not experienced it, but it is out there and in Ft Worth Texas it is School Policy.

I don't really blame my daughter's school. They have to answer to the parents at the end of the day. Its the stupid, "OMG! A gun!" mentality that has penatrated our culture that caused the problem. The assistant principal even told me that she agreed with my assessment that the gun hysteria was stupid. Unfortunately, she is the one who has to deal with the fallout.

I just knew that my daughter was crying and her credibility was in question. I am not known for taking the subtle approach. I figure, "OK. This is easy to fix and proceed to fix it." I knew it was not a public school, so I could probably get away with it. The public schools are run by a bunch of ultra-leftist morons who probably would have tried to expel her over it. In fact, the private school where my daughter goes took in a student who was expelled from public school for drawing a picture of stick figures having a shoot-out.

Awesome!

That's just priceless.

You go, Scott.

So, she's what, nine? Ten?

Cute as a button.

Good trigger discipline, too.

Rock on, dad!

Beautiful child, nice hardware, excellent trigger discipline, a great dad!

What exactely was the problem again?

The next day, I got a phone call asking me to come in for a chat. The teacher and the principal were not amused. Apparently, pictures of guns cause phone calls from freaked out parents. My daughter was not in trouble, but they asked me to please not do that again. Oh well. It was worth it.

You know what? The teacher and principal DO NOT have to be amused. The caption attached to the photos was not at all inappropriate for "show and tell".

Like some folk might choose to be offended at something one might say, some parents choose to be "freaked out" by pictures of guns.

Keira (and dad), you go, girl! thumbs.gif

:what:

I used to draw huge, drawn-out battles with giant robots, infantry, and airplanes all utterly destroying each other with lasers, bombs, and most of all, good old fashioned guns. Never did I have a teacher so much as comment on it (granted they were just doodles on the ledgers of my notebooks, but still).

Hell, I routinely wrote research and thesis papers on nuclear weapons, and probably scared a few teachers with the amount I knew on the subject. I was never disciplined or even talked to about it being "inappropriate" or anything... is this a relatively new phenomenon? (for reference, I went to public school all my life, graduated in 2003).

I am in Ocoee Fla and was investigated by DCS because a teacher overheard my son, then also9,telling his friend that I had taken him to a range and let him shoot a .22 pistol

Before DCS was sic-ed on me my son was taken into a room with the principle a counselor, his teacher and a DCS representative with then gave him a lecture on how it was wrong that his father "trained him with weapons"
My son is 16 now and has never accepted another invitation to go shooting with me.
His mother, my ex owns and her mother bot own firearms that I gace them and I his uncle, the ex's brother to his first gun show where he bought an AK 9mm and 12ga so his attitude is not coming from the school

In comparison I don't think scurtis' school handled it too badly. Their issue with the photos was probably more about disruption of their work day than it was about content, but i do think they could have handled it over the phone

Never did I have a teacher so much as comment on it (granted they were just doodles on the ledgers of my notebooks, but still)
My doodles usually included a knife wielding masked man labeled "Me" attacking my latest nemesis usually labeled "Madeline" (the girl that kept trying to kiss me at recess)
Just think what they would do to me these days

You are going to have to do better than that to impress the 3rd graders in rural Texas. I can't speak for the Ft. Worth ISD but just about everywhere outside of the cities guns are still a part of the culture.

Liberal teachers and adminstrators die hard and fast out here. Nearly every single one of my older son's friends has a least one gun of their own and they are all nine and under. About half of them already have bagged their first deer.

Still, if you are stuck in crazy liberalville and they did not call child protectvie services on you; you are doing great!

Well the FL school system better be ready because sometime next year my fiance will have earned her english education degree and start teaching high school students. This is the same girl that is bugging me about what pistol I am going to get her for her 21st birthday in a few months. Needless to say she is more than just tolerant of my firearm obsession.

I must apologize. I confused two stories. There was a student in another town that got suspended for the stick figure thing. The expelled 6 year-old told another student he was going to "kill him" in the normal use of the vernacular that all kids use. Zero tolerance interpretted that as a real and legitimate death threat. My daughter's school took him in. The assistant principal thinks the public schools have lost all common sense.

Keep It Going....

Now you need to have your daughter post those photos on her myspace account or better yet, pay the $10 to register a domain name and get a free web account from yahoo or wherever...lets see:

You kids school can't regulate the internet.

I'm sure that you can think of a few more. You get the picture.

PS - Good Job!!!

Nice!! I would say your a good father. Now try it in the DPRK and you would have been hauled into jail.

Damn the only bad thing I did in school was my sophomore year we had to create these masks for theater and I had forgotten to do mine. So 5 mins before class I came up with one on graph paper that said "Nuke'm All" teacher was not so pleased.

Apparently, pictures of guns cause phone calls from freaked out parents. My daughter was not in trouble, but they asked me to please not do that again.

"OR WHAT?!"

Shoulda challenged them with this question.

In all the shootings involving kids, I have yet to come across one that the kids involved said "My dad, uncle, grandfather, etc took me shooting when I was a kid". Hey, all you parents have to be involved in your kids life. I will make a bet that 99% of the kids involved in Columbine situations had parents who were too busy to be a parent. I am very fortunate to have a father who taught me how to shoot, fish, drive and and a lot of other things. And I have done the same to my kids. I have had a 22 rifle in my room since I was 12 years old. My 19 year old son has his maternal grandfathers Mosin Nagant rifle in his room and I sleep soundly every night.

Scurtis, congratulations on being an involved parent and standing behind your child. I just love the pictures. Keep up the good work

Not gonna B.S. you for once I'm with the School, sorry dude. I just hate seeing kids with guns no matter what.

I've known people to have child sevices called on them for litterally yelling at thier kids in public.(not exagerating) Trust me delete the pics dude. I know it aint worth losing your kids. Sorry to preach.
