Wife and I are going primitive camping on slickrock this weekend with friends. Four days of sleeping in the pickup shell on foam pads, cooking over a propane burner, pooping in a bucket toilet, and hiking in the most incredible, remote county God ever created.
We'll take the ropes and harnesses and maybe even do a technical canyon or two.
I can't wait!
Over the years (now approaching 40 years together), we've camped in big canvas tents with cots, backpacking tents with foam pads, big trailers, a slide-in camper, in snow caves we dug ourselves, and under the stars. Our kids slept on tent floors, trailer bench seats, and napped in play cribs under Yellowstone's pine trees.
We've slept through subzero cold, thunder-lighting-and-rainstorms, awoke to 8" of snow on our rig, and in wind so intense that it bent the poles over on our cheap WalMart tent and laid it over on its side with us and our four kids in it! And plenty of clear, calm nights where the milky way looked close enough to reach out and touch.
The most fun we've had? Watching our kids do the same things with our grandchildren.
My best advise is to not assume that you'll get everything right the first trip. Go, try a few things, and figure out how to do it better the next trip. Keep trying dutch oven recipes until you've got several that you both love. Find activities you both enjoy, like canoeing, hiking, fishing, or hunting. Gradually invest in great gear; the most important gear for us was GREAT sleeping bags.
And have fun together!
