If the .454 casull could hold 1500ft/lbs @ 110 yards then it's legal for moose where I live.

That would put a Rossi '92 in .45LC/.454 at the top of my wish list!

I haven't found any recipe for a load that claims to be able to do this, but maybe I haven't looked hard enough .

Thank you for your input.

nuh-uh

I just ran some data through a ballistics program.
You'd have to have 2150 fps MV for a 240 grain bullet to have 1500 ft.lbs. retained energy at 110 yards.
Can you get that velocity?

yuh-huh :neener:

you just need a rifle to do it:

http://www.gunblast.com/Paco_Legacy_454.htm

Hes got his loads and velocity readings on there.

Legally though, you still might run into trouble if there are no factory loads with published data. Unless you find someone nice enough to let you prove to them your loads have the appropriate energy to make them legal.

One of the loads on the Gunblast page is supposed to get a 325gr bullet to a MV of 1880fps.

Speers 300 grain Deepcurl .45 "revolver" bullet allegedly has a BC of .233

According to Hornadys ballistic calculator a 300 grain bullet (0.23 bc, rounding down to stay safe) at 1850 fps (i.e. a somewhat milder load than suggested on gunblast) will still be packing a whooping punch at just above 1600 foot-pounds.

In other words it's probably doable without completely maxing out your load.

Thanks for the link!

I don't own the rifle nor do I have the time, money and need for it but perhaps one day... would make one hell of a promenade rifle.

Well, I can get that out of 45 Colt in a Rossi M92 (in 454 Casull, normally shoot 45 Colt), so I would say it would be no problemo for 454 Casull to match (or beat) that.

It -will- make you appreciate the built in recoil pad however!

I've gotten 2000fps+ out of a Marlin cowboy .45LC 20"bbl with 250gr XTP's and stayed within printed data for .45LC in a rifle. That's 2200+ foot pounds at the muzzle and still 1500ftlbs at 75 yards.

So, I would say yes. It is doable. With the 300gr Speer Deepcurl mentioned above and 1820fps you would have your 1500ftlbs@110y. You can get 1700-1750 with that bullet out of a 7.5" pistol, so I think another 100fps would be easy for the rifle.

Be aware they don't make them any more, you are going to have to find a used one.

The stainless steel ones are =really= pretty.

When did this happen and why wasn't I notified!!!
