I was thinking of just making my own "boresnake" without the bronze brush bit. Just take a shoe lace and tie a knot then soak it in a bore cleaner and just pulling it through a few times then washing it for the next use. I was thinking that the rough bits on the lace would be enough to take out the fouling without scratching the bore. I know soldiers use this method on their rifles, but is it adequate now?

It would work ok but the knot would have to be small. You might be better off to use a thick boot lace with no knot.

PS I only clean the actions of my 22 rifle and they very well.

There is actually no real need to clean .22 RF barrels that much.
More .22's are ruined by over-cleaning the bore then not cleaning the bore.
What really needs to be cleaned is the chamber.
It gets all the carbon fouling, and a rod & bronze bore brush is all that is going to do a good job of getting it out!

If you want to clean it, or oil it for storage, buy a cleaning rod kit, or a real Bore-Snake.

They are cheaper then losing a shoe string in the barrel and getting it stuck in the bore.

If you just must make your own, use heavy weed-eater line to make a flexable nylon pull-through.
Heat the end of it to melt it, then stick it in a fired case to make the end bore-size. After it cools, stick the line through a cleaning patch and pull it through.

That won't remove chamber fouling worth a hoot though!
