Can there be too many

I have enough. Even shed some recently. Since I'm not a collector, decided to only keep what I would shoot at the range on a regular basis which includes those designated as self defense.

You reach a point in your life when you know your heirs don't want all your guns. I'm not talking about family heirlooms or collectibles.
In my case, I reached that point a long, long time ago. However, knowing that my heirs didn't want all of my guns never stopped me from buying more guns back then (the ones I wanted) and it's not going to stop me now.
For that matter, my Mom and Dad are both gone now, and I didn't even want all of the guns they had. I guess I'm having a hard time understanding your point. I mean, what does whether or not my heirs want all of my guns have to do with whether or not I want them? o_O

I dunno. If one has about twenty-plus guns in the queue needing to be cleaned after the last few range sessions, does that mean one has enough?

I've got a few still needing cleaning since our last big shoot in June 2022.

Can there be too many?

Yes.

Does that mean I won't get anymore?

No.

I'm sort of that way. I've just about reached the point that the only time I'll buy another gun is when I've sold one. ;)
I typically just sell what i dont use constantly and buy something i think i will enjoy shooting more. Life is too short to just keep them all and not use them.

I'm kind of the opposite, the gun has to be REAL BAD before I'll dispose of it. I had a Springfield P9C Subcompact in 40 S&W that was continually breaking parts. I traded it off at Gander Mountain for a 38 Super Colt 1911.

On the other had, I held on to my Remington 51. Mine does not have have the problems others were complaining about.

I won't win the "dies with the most guns contest" but I'll give the winner somewhat a run for his money.:)

Most gun owners would do well to sell a gun or two and buy some good training.
Or , as someone said “ most gun owners would benefit more from $10 a month Planet Fitness membership, than from getting another gun”. Unfortunately, that applies to me as well

I do. I wish I had spent a lot less time and money buying guns and more shooting them/competing with them, etc.
Let’s be honest : we all sometimes like to do chest puffing about “ rights” , but having multiple guns is typically not a necessity, it is a hobby that we enjoy. Not necessarily cheapest one . And that is Ok . There are much “worse” things people do with their money. My guns will outlive me and will go to my children.

Sometimes I think I've bought "enough" and won't be buying for a while. Sometimes that lasts for several years. Until about a year ago, I went about 3 years without buying any guns, and it had been about 3 years before I bought those two. I was going to cut back and sell 5-10 guns I don't shoot much anymore or really need (especially after buying a P365 and my first Glock when I was finally able to get a MD carry permit post-Breun). Well, I needed to get to the range more often if I was going to carry regularly, and before I knew it I bought about as many new guns as I've sold (I put 8 guns on consignment a couple months ago, 6 have sold, and I'm about to put 2-3 others on consignment).

Do I have all my basic needs covered, for sure. Do I have several niche "needs" covered, definitely. Do I really need anything else... no. Will I buy more, and are there one or two niche "needs" I will still fill, of course!

My wife says I have enough guns pretty often. When I say it, it's usually right before I buy another.

I have way more than enough. In fact, I'm looking at a major downsizing in the future. I have a safe filled to capacity of guns I have not used in years. The only reason I haven't done it already is that I don't need the $ and they will be worth more tommorow than they are today.

How long is a piece of string?

I play mind and waiting games with myself so I don't go out and buy anymore. I am more constrained by space than money which helps, you can't easily safe up space like you can cash.

Yep, and as I've said before, that "lack of space" problem is at least doubled when you have a wife that likes guns, shooting and hunting as much as you do. My wife and I are out of room in our safes for more guns, and out of room in our house for more safes. AND, at our respective ages, we're not about to buy and move into a larger house just so that we can buy more guns - which we will be trying to figure out who to "pass" or sell them to in the not-too-distant future. ;)

I could admit to having “a lot” but I would never feel I have “enough.” If I would never die then I would always buy.

I’ve had “too many” twice in my life, so far. I had over 300 in inventory at one point, liquidated, rebuilt over a decade to over a hundred again, liquidated again. Honestly, I ALMOST or SORT OF feel like I have “too many” once again, but largely rather because I have a lot of heirloom rifles, and rifles I keep out of nostalgia, but of which I just don’t and won’t make use - Rifles I like, and like owning, but I just don’t shoot any more, so it’s tough to justify holding on. I have a few JM stamped Marlin 1894’s, as an example, and really only make use of one of them. I have two blued and walnut .30-06’s, one a Ruger M77 MkII, my first deer rifle I bought for myself, and one a Rem 700 BDL, which was my father-in-law’s rifle; I can’t really bring myself to sell either, and neither are worth enough to warrant their sale, but I also don’t make appropriate use of either any longer, and can’t really justify why they should rot in the back of my safe, then rot in my son’s safe in the future when I’m gone… I have a Bushmaster Varmint Special Stainless I just can’t bring myself to sell, but also can’t bring myself to shoot any more either….

So I’m kind of stuck again thinking - eh, I don’t need all of these, don’t even want all of these… but I can’t quite drop the axe on them…
300 , I hope to get to your level one day sir . I need to get busy .

Nah, it sounds great, but you need spare rooms just to hold the safes, and you can’t come remotely close to making use of them. Between handguns, rifles, and shotguns, I never want to be over 100 again, and really don’t even want to be over 50, but I find myself continuously buying more and not divesting as quickly. In my head, I’d actually like to purge about 25-30 right now, but I can only point to about a half dozen I actually could let myself sell.

Maybe this thread is the Universe reminding me I should purge some.
