jlott, what about an AK chambered for .308. Talk about affordability. I was thinking of a Saiga .308 mysel for less than $700 NIB. :D:D

I'm getting the urge to buy a .308 as well. I like lightest and most accurate. Am I lookind at an AR-10? How do they cmpare for accuracy and weight? Are the Saigas as good as other imports? An M-14 clone or AR-10 would be top choices but if I can get some as good cheaper or some way better I'm open.

I bought a MAS49/56 that was rechambered for 308. Some of these conversions had issues some did not. Mine does not. I paid 300 for it. Bought extra mags at a gun show for 20 a piece (10 rounders) and removed the latch and had a friend wire weld them onto FAL mags. Paid 10 for the FAL mags. Laugh if you want but now I have a battle tested MBR with 6 20 rnd mags for 500 dollars. It is accurate and and gobbles up Wolf 308 without any problems. It works for me.

no the saiga 308 is priced very nice, but you spend 400 bucks on 10 mags!
id rather dump more money into the rifle then mags if possible, but im not buying cheap mags either

There ain't nothing cheap or affordable about 308/7.62 rifles. The rifles aren't cheap, the mags aren't cheap (except for CETME) and the ammo isn't cheap.

Perhaps just get the best gun for the job (that you can afford) and hold off on buying the 10 mags. Get a couple, then build on the collection. Having to buy 10 at once may put you at a lower quality rifle than you want.

i had/pending a sale a sar-8

just couldnt bond with it, and its not a big deal but im a lefty. no biggie to reach across for the charging handle but i didnt like to
plus its a a little harder to charge then other type rifles

I just bought a CETME too, $499. Only real problem is that rear sight is crooked - but I've cut that off and am putting a G3 sight on there instead. Otherwise shoots very well.

Actually, the CETME/PTR91/HK 91 family is not bad for lefties...some might say even better than for righties - the reason being is that the standard mag catch is on the right of the rifle. Sure, the cocking handle requires reaching over to get to, but its not too bad with a bit of practice.

Hey hey! That CETME looks like fun to shoot. I'm interested all of the sudden :D.

Is CETME based on H&K G3??
Sure looks exactly the same

Still stuck btwn 308 and 30'06 tho....

cetme .308

cetme .308-- its a hard hitting battle rifle, if you reload it puts logitudal gas lubrication lines on your brass but it works very well accurate as a bolt gun ..heres mine a century arms .308 sporter.....

Other way around.

After WWII, some Mauser engineers moved to Spain and designed a rifle for the Spanish military organization CETME (which is actually an acronym). They adopted the rifle, and long story short, Germany refined the design a little and adopted it as the G3 ("G" being the German word for "rifle.").

What MT said. And because its so close to the G3 you can put a lot of G3 accessories on with no to very minor fitting changes. There are some interchangability issues, but they are mainly to do with the working parts (which work exactly the same as G3/HK91, but have different micro measurements so not interchangeable).

The 500 dollar Cetme's you can buy are from Century Arms. While that company has a very dubious reputation, and it is highly likely you will have to do some minor fettling with such items as sights and sorting out your bolt gap, by and large nowadays you will be getting a functional rifle for your $500, which is 600 to 700 cheaper than the nearest competitor, the PTR-91.

I've put a couple of hundred rounds through mine now - functions great, shoots tight groups. However, the rear sight was canted, and there is very little adjustment on these rifles, so I cut it off and am going to install a G3 barrel rear sight and base. Apaart from that, and the fact the front handguard is a cheap piece of crap that overheats to the point of being untouchable after 50 rounds (I'm replacing with G3 wide guard with built in heatshield), very happy with the purchase.

If you guys feel that the .308's mentioned so far are to pricey you should try and find an IMI Galil in .308.

I see plenty of the .223 ones but the .308s are out of sight on price. They sure are purrdy tho. :)

last month i bought a m1a loaded ss/syn for 1250 perfect shape. i had also seen some chinese clones between 800 to 1000. you could also get an m1 grand and convert it to 308 if you dont want 30-06. my advice is to be patient and get what you want even if you have to wait a couple months.

Assemble a Sarco FAL parts kit on a Coonan or Entreprise receiver.

Cheap(er) .308 MBR.

Isn't the Galil also based on the AK?? So is Saiga right?

What's the diff?
