.308 battle rifle choices?

I really like any AR10s especially my Armalites, my Springfield Armory M1A standard loaded with walnut stock will stay that way, with only irons. thinking of the scout squad, just dont care for the extra muzzle blast. my M1A will take out hogs at 300 yards and I aint afraid to shoot further when I get the chance.

had an opportunity to play with one of these and i didnt really like it.. seemed like little more than a custom AR to me.. so i dont really think theyre worth that extra cost for what little they add to whats already available

Fair enough. Since you seem partial to the AK, have you ever looked at the old Action Arms Galils in 308?

i sometimes hunt in the state of new york, which i live very close to the border too.. so something like a FAL would be entirely illegal... a saiga however, is entirely legal, so i would be able to use the saiga rifle while hunting in that state, and after i move back to wisconsin i can convert the saiga to an AK configuration and pick up an FAL as well, or more likely build one from parts

Sounds like a pretty good plan! :)

I've owned both a M14 and FAL (Stg 58A). I sold the FAL to get the M14 and have sold the M14 to get a Ruger RSM (I know not related at all). I regret the FAL sell, not the M14. The Fal had better egonomics, recoil control and accuracy. I got less than MOA with Portugese surplus if you can believe it. The M14 wa a rack grade parts kit (TRW) built on an Armscorp reciever. Had both GI walnut and GI fiberglass stocks, neither made a difference, about 2-2.5MOA with anything I tried. Which is good enough but I was spoiled on the FAL. The FAL was faster to bring into action and to me was more of a natural fit. The FAL trigger was heavier at first, but it was easy to stone to get a smooth, glass rod (if a bit on the heavy side) break. If I could go back I'd never have sold the DSA Stg 58 FAL.

Plus mags for the FAL were $4 apiece at the time (2003)

I have the STG58 Para with folding stock and 16" barrel, which I just purchased a few weeks ago. It has become my favorite semiauto over my DPMS AR15 and WASR10 AK-47. The rifle had a surprisingly light recoil for a .308. But is is darn heavy.

If you aren't satisfied with the heavy weight of a 308 semi autos and don't quite need the power, don't overlook a 6.8 spc semi auto. Great intermediate ballistics with much more mobile platforms available. After researching, I concluded the 6.8 was a very good balance between the 5.56x45 and the 7.62x51.

im already converting an AKM rifle to 6.8mm SPC in the near future (since i have no interests in AR15s)... going to add a .308 saiga to the collection now and get the parts for an FAL probably early next year... as long as i have a garand i dont feel as much of a need to spend money on an M1A and can skip that one entirely.... i think a saiga and FAL would fill my battle rifle need completely

Very nice rifle, sir! Please tell us a little about the mods you've done to it.

Enterprise Arms FAL
-SA58 FAL Extreme Duty Extended Scope Mount from DSARMS
-FAL Rail Interface Full Length Hand guard from DSARMS
-MAGPUL PRS2™ Precision-Adjustable Stock – FAL Model
-WEAVER Tactical AR-15/M16 Flat Top Riser Rail from WEAVER
-FN Manufacture M249 SAW Pistol Grip, from DSARMS

I just bought this gun from my son and haven't had the opportunity to shoot it yet (thanks Isaac!). The gun weighs a TON and I'm going to be removing the rail riser. As a guy posted on another site, "it has more rails than Union Pacific!" ;)
According to my son, with all the extra weight, it has about the same recoil as an AR-15  I'll believe that when I shoot it! Hopefully tomorrow or Friday!

ptr91(hk91 clone) mags are dirt cheap and available, williams trigger specialties does a nice set trigger setup for it,just send them the trigger group.easy to change from a standard stock to compact by removing 2 pins.barrel always stays to same point of impact
