Cast load powders

Unfortunately I ran out of that bullet and I got a mold to prevent that from happening again. I'm starting over basically. That was also a gas checked 150.
Lyman’s 48th. Bullet #311299, 200gr no gas check, AA#9 loading data is there. Very similar to the 180gr SIL bullet you’re casting. 16gr start and you’ll probably see good results around 20gr. Not sure but that you won’t have a rainbow trajectory tho

I have used some IMR4198 in 8x57 with a gas checked 196 gr. bullet. If I remember correctly, at 2100 fps load.

Reloder 7 was also recommended. But that gets used for 300 BLK in subsonics.

180 is a 357 bullet. Interestingly the rcbs sil is also 165 in 308. Its gas checked though.

Unfortunately IMR SR4759 is no more because it was THEE powder for cast bullet rifle loads and reduced velocity rifle loads. Allegedly Trail Boss was supposed to be its replacement but it is not at all IMO.

I see Accurate AA5744 mentioned above, that is a very good choice for me and I use it exclusively for cast 30-30, 30-06 and 45-70 loads...

My primary cast rifle powder is IMR4198 (or H4198,) although AA5744 is a reasonable substitute. I use it in everything save the .348, where I use IMR3031 for more velocity. IMR4227 is reasonable, but I prefer 4198, hands down… it’s simply a better solution, IMHO.

Just loaded up my first test box with 4198. Only 3 round groups to cover more ground in my inital time. Started at 24 and went up in .3 increments. The last 5 rounds were the same as a 2 round group seemed silly at 28.5. No listing for 165 in my book so I used the overlap of 160 and 170 and called it good. These are currently weighing in at 166 and change.

I’ve used AA5744, it worked very well. It costs a little more, but you would typically use less by weight to match the 4198’s… so it is a close wash, cost wise.

I’ve found 5744 to be a little ‘junky,’ leaving crap in the barrel after firing, but it never seemed to affect accuracy, etc.
