spiroxlii, sounds like both of you ended up picking out the best gun for your situation.

I told her that I put the down payment on her Bersa Thunder 380, and she surprised me today by telling me that she went down to the shop while running errands and put a down payment on the gun I've had my eye on for the last few visits.

She knew that I was taking money out of the fund I had set aside for my own handgun to get her the Bersa, so she is dipping into her sewing/crafts fund to return the favor! I will soon be the proud new owner of a Daewoo DP51/K5 pistol.

Pros:
Cost is only $300
9mm is cheap but effective
Comes with a 13rd mag
Accepts S&W 15rd mags
It fits my hand well
I shoot well with it
It gets positive reviews
"Fast-action" is interesting
Same model is used by South Korean military/LE

Cons:
Weapon is no longer imported, so parts could be expensive

The Daewoo DP51/K5 gets good reviews?

Remember that it's not a Daewoo automobile. Daewoo made a bad name for itself in the USA by selling a substandard product for reasons that I still don't fully understand. Both Hyundai and Daewoo are known for much more than just automobiles outside of the USA. Oddly, they both sell much higher-quality automobiles in their home market than they do in the USA (until recently when Daewoo dropped out of the US auto market and Hyundai increased both its quality and prices in the US).

In Korea, Hyundai and Daewoo both produce, among other things, weapons for the South Korean military. Hyundai makes the current and next-generation main battle tank for the ROK military along with other armored fighting vehicles, and Daewoo makes a range of small arms including the ROK military's standard issue assault rifle, submachine gun, and pistol. Google the various Daewoo small arms, and you won't see many negative comments apart from "they're ugly" and "they aren't imported anymore, so parts are expensive." As far as their reliability and accuracy, I read more good than bad. Some of the positive comments I've read about this gun came from right here on THR.

I have lived in both China and South Korea. I've seen the odd difference in quality between "Made in China" goods for the Chinese market and "Made in China" goods for the export market. Chinese goods meant for US shores are actually 100 times better than Chinese goods meant to be sold within China. Korea, until recently, was just the opposite. They produced crap for export to the USA so they could get their foot in the door based on price alone, but they can and do make much higher-quality stuff for their home market. The rush to get their foot in the door worked for some companies (Hyundai, Samsung, LG) and failed for others (Daewoo).

*EDIT*
Though I am half-Korean and was born at a US Army hospital in South Korea, I do not want this gun out of any sort of "Korean pride" or allegiance. As you can see from my list of weapons in my signature, my guns come from all over the world. I've got examples from Australia, India, Russia/Soviet Union, China, Yugoslavia, the USA, and Italy. The fact that the Daewoo DP51 is Korean is an interesting plus for me, and I won't deny that adding one more nation of origin to my weapons collection is a motivating factor. I'm also looking to add a Czech weapon soon in the form of a surplus vz82 (falsely labeled as a CZ82) from AIM Surplus or SOG.

Both of you need to check out www.corneredcat.com , a website by a woman, for women about guns. She is one very savvy woman who writes very well. Her advice is also good for men - check it out, you will be very well informed and pleased.

+1 on checking out Pax's website. Glad she found a pistol she liked. I have heard good things about the Bersa Thunder .380. My first wife was a wheel gun fanatic. Carried an old Ruger Security Six. My current bride is a rifle shooter, and can't get her interested in hand guns at all. Would love to buy my wife a little pocket gun, but I wouldn't even get to play with it then. She would probably trade it for a mini-14. Please put up a range report when you get the Bersa.
