Its a myth...started by the big trucking companies (Schneider, Swift, J.B. Hunt, and such). I hired an attorney to look into this for me...there are no Federal laws saying you cant carry in a CMV.

Here is the official word from DOT

Here is a letter of interpretation from the Department of Transportation answering the question of the legality of carrying in a commercial vehicle.

PHMSA Interpretation #06-0165

They basically state that it is a matter for state or local authorities.

DOH!

I was referencing information in this thread to another forum, and posted my reply here.

I are an idiot.

The notion that there's a federal law against carrying a weapon in a truck is a very, very old urban legend. It just won't die, and I'd love to know what idiot started it. Tom Gresham has been debunking it for awhile now but it just keeps coming back.

Of course, all state and local laws apply and you generally need a CCW if it's concealed on your person (except here and Vermont). And you could get fired. But there is no DOT law or reg against having a weapon in the cab of your semi.

It was a lie started by a number of major trucking companies in an effort to keep the drivers in line.

My father retired from Topeka PD in 1990 and decided to take up OTR driving. Went to the school and went to work for JB Hunt. At the time they forbid carry on their trucks but would pay drivers extra $$$ to drive into certain high crime areas. The drivers called it combat pay.
