Hi

I found the following advertisement for a Virginia non-resident CCW permit. "The license you will be applying for is a Virginia Non-Resident Concealed Handgun License. The state of Virginia now allows you to take an online class to meet the training requirement for your non-resident license." I found this on-line and it claims that you will get a CCW after paying 49.99 and taking a 1 hour online class. Does anyone know anything about this? Is it legal? I live in Ohio and plan on getting a CCW.
Thanks:what:

Virginia does have a non-resident CHP (Concealed Handgun Permit). Check your state to see if a non-resident CHP is legal . Many states don't recognize non-resident CHP's. Wisconsin is a little backward in that they don't allow a Virginia CHP but will recognize a Virginia non-resident CHP. NRA has a good page to find out info on recipriocity laws between states. Utah non-resident is probably the most common one that covers the most states.

VA Non-Resident Permit

First, yes, it is true that Virginia accepts an online course for the training requirement for the concealed handgun permit (CHP).
The official State Police information page is at
http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Firearms_NonresidentConcealed.shtm

Virginia has always had a broad range of classes acceptable for the training requirement. As of 2009, they added online course to the list.

The details are at
http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Firearms_NonresidentConcealed.shtm#Documentation_of_Competence_with_a_Handg

An explanation about the 2009 law allowing online courses is at

The detail that dusty4u talks about is that some states do not accept non-resident permits from their own residents. According to the 2010 edition of the Traveler's Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States, Ohio doe accept Virginia permits. The book does not mention the nuance about whether Ohio accepts other states' permits for Ohio residents.

Details about Ohio laws on the subject are also available at HandgunLaw.US

As I understand the situation concerning Wisconsin, it seems the reason Wisconsin accepts the Virginia Non-resident permit only is that for non-resident permits Virginia uses NICS, but for resident permits, the state uses a Virginia State Police database, instead of NICS. The fact that the Virginia database links back to NICS data (and has more data than NICS) gets lost in the legal language of the Wisconsin law.

Craig VA,

Virginia runs residents through the State Police database where as non- residents are run through both the State Police database and NICS.
