changes over time

I'm 72 and kinda broke down from too many bronc riding mishaps.

My wife and I have carried various revolvers for over 40 years. Recently the J frame .38 was hurting her hand and she wasn't having fun shooting anymore.

She went shopping and she chose a Kahr CW45.. I fiddled with the gun for 3 days and was sufficiently impressed that I bought one too. I retired my N frame .45 revolver and now carry the Kahr which has two more rounds and is a heck of a lot lighter.

i have never carried large or even daily, how i had to dress and my work forbade it. now that im mostly retired im still used to carrying snubbie size. whatever i carry, and usually now it is either a ruger lcr 22lr or bond arms 410/45lc or steel taurus 38sp snubbie, is something that i like to practice with. i recently discovered 38sp shorts so i will expand my toolkit to a sw 38 airweight; with regular 38sp ammo, even cowboy loads, the recoil was too snappy to practice enough to become proficient. as others so rightly said, half the battle is being alert and avoiding trouble.

At 64, I guess I'm luckier than most. Yes...do have a couple of lumbar bulging disks, but are under control with ESI (injections)...maybe once a year. Still able to carry full size 1911 and Glocks or the occasional bigger revolver. As long as we can handle our physical
limitations and it does not deter from our awareness and ability to put lead on target.. I guess we are all ok. We make adjustments to our situations as needed.

Concealed carry over the years, there have been a few. In the mid 70s my college girlfriend gave me a S&W mod39 which I shot and carried for a few years after going to work in LE. Yes, we are still together. I shot the 39 enough that a shake of your hand made the gun rattle:)

Then a S&W short barreled Mod66. Heavy and clunky.
Looking for something lighter so followed that with S&W 4616. Also a bit heavy.

In the years I carried a 1911 it could double as a concealed carry. I also picked up a Walther PPK that went a number of years as the first choice. Reliable, accurate and small. What's not to Like; well the trigger was not my favorite.

One of the guys put together a Glock group buy when the 26/27 came out. Out of the 10 or 11 guns everyone bought a 27 but me. I bought the 26 and carried it on into retirement.

For a couple years I carried a Kel-Tek 3PAT because of how light and easy it was to carry. Recoil like a 44 magnum, but easy to carry.

Current carry is a SA SDx in .45

My conclusion is I want a smaller compact gun that has an above average trigger pull. The gun should not be too heavy and compact enough for easy carry but large enough for comfortable handling and accurate shot placement. Maybe now that I am in my 60s I'm done trying new guns. But then again maybe not.

My 3 carry guns are a Taurus 85 in .38 Special, M&P Shield in 9mm, and a Walther PPK in .380. All between 5 and 7 rounds, usually with a reload in a pocket.

My gun doesn't change how I feel about going somewhere. If I wouldn't go there without a gun, I'm not going there with a gun either.
