I received a pump action field tactical model, but I can't load more than two rounds in it. I removed the cap for the tube, but can't tell how to get the eend off the tube to see if there's a plug installed. It came with no manual.

Sounds like there is a plug in the mag tube

You were correct, there was a plastic dowel in it.

Now I have a new problem. I lost the plastic spring retainer while disassembling; it shot across the room with the spring. Found the spring, not the retainer. LOL.

I reassembled it sans retainer. It feeds, cycles, and ejects fine. Would it be safe shoot with just the magazine cap holding the spring in the tube?

I'll defer that to someone else as that is not my forte. You might see if Brownell's, Midway, possibly CD themselves has the part.

It should be fine without the retainer. I do not know where you would get another, maybe Numrich.

retainer is just to keep it all contained if you take the barrel off to clean it. if you can get it all together without it, great. keep your eyes peeled and the ratainer may show up some day.

+1on using it without the retainer, just be sure the mag tube cap stays tight. If it is designed like the Remington's the retainer also keeps the cap tight. In fact, ill bet a Remington retainer will fit.

Some luck: Numrich has the part for around six bucks. Once again, thanks everyone. I haven't been around in awhile, because mobile texting is a pain. Much better info here than Facebook, LOL.
