For what reason would the charter be better than the Taurus?

Just so happens my boss got the 40 a few days ago, nice pistol a little rough fit and finish wise but I like the idea of a 9mm revolver to go along with my 3 other 9s.

I kept reading bad things about the Taurus that's what has kept me from getting one. Plus I'd like a longer barrel.

I was in the same boat as you. I finally bought a Taurus 905 that an lgs had on hand that I could inspect rather than order. Its been one of the best firearm purchases I've ever made. Its accurate, easy to carry, cheap to feed and digests everything. I shoot the living pee out of mine.

As to how the charter stacked up I know not. I'll just have to buy one and see

R.W.Dale - the 905 will work with or without the Taurus stellar clips right?

When you said you don't fire 380 out of it - do you mean without the stellar clips?

I don't know if the 905 can fire 380 or not, but on Charter Arms website it says:

the 9mm Parabellum revolver will also chamber factory .380ACP

I'm not sure how it does that though because I beleive that for the 9mm, the holding mechanism is floating on a spring and the cartridge spaces off the chamber & the case head. It can't do that with the 380...

I've read a lot of bad things about Taurus and I have a shooting buddy who had a Taurus and the cylinder fell out of it.

But... I actually have never heard any bad things about the 905 except for the Taurus stellar clips, and you can get after-market moon clips for the revolver that work fine.

I would be even happier with a 3" - 4"

There is also another 9mm revolver on the market. CzechPoint USA is importing the Alfa Proj 9231 pistols - 3" barrel:

These are all sold out at the moment. Alfa Proj also makes a 6" version. I was thinking about writing to Dan at CzechPoint USA and asking him if he can import a 6" model... the 9261

On emailing Dan, I did exactly that a while ago:

How many moonclips does the revolver come with?
Two.

Does the revolver come with the moon clip loader shown on the alfa-proj website?
Yes.

Can the revolver be loaded and fired without a moonclip,
Yes.

with the loss of extraction?
Correct. The moon clip is used for extraction of empty cases.

Does the 9mm revolver share the barrel with the 357 or 38 Special revolver?
I can’t be sure. I’ll contact the factory and get back to you later in the week on this question.

Replied:
For all revolvers in cal. .38 (Steel or Holek) and .357 the barrels are:
- 6 grooves, right-hand twist 476 mm.
For cal. 9mm Luger the barrels are:
- 6 grooves, right-hand twist 250 mm.

Will you be offering other barrel lengths?
No.

Will you be offering a stainless model?
No.

Can you order grips for this revolver?
Yes - walnut grips. Should be available in 2 months as a spare part. Price unknown at this time.

I asked Dan the same barrel question:

Q:
Can you tell me what the bore diameter is in inches? I am wondering if it is .355 or .356 or even .357"

Dan:
Rifling in 9 mm Luger revolvers is according to CIP, which means: 6 right hand grooves, twist 250 mm, groove width 2,49 mm, diameter in the groove 9.02 mm and diameter in the field 8.82 mm

9.02mm = .35512 that's too small for 38 spl - it's a barrel diameter for 9mm NATO.

They're out of stock now. :(

I'm wondering if that's more because they're popular sellers or because Dan just didn't import that many.

The two things that I'm concerned about - that I don't want to see happen in a 9mm revolver are:

1) Using a .38 spl or 357 mag barrel.

2) Using a .38 spl cylinder which is really too long for the 9mm NATO cartridge.

I'm really not sure what the Charter Arms 9mm Pitbull does with these issues, but it looks like Alfa Proj is using their 357 frame but putting 9mm cylinders and 9mm barrels in them. If you don't mind the cylinder gap in the front - it's no problem, and I'd rather have a 9mm cylinder than have the bullet jump (although I've read many times where this makes no diffference - it just bugs me and I'd rather not have it).

I've also read from many shooters that they can't tell where shooting 9mm through a 357 mag barrel reduces accuracy - but I'd rather not have my 9mm bullet rattling around in a big ol 357 magnum barrel...

I was so close to buying the 9231 but while I have read nothing but good things with the importer I wanted more back end support if there was an issue. I bought a RIA 9mm 1911 instead from Davidson's. If I am flush with cash and he is still selling them, I might buy one in the future.

As for what it gets you over the Charter and the Taurus: Adjustable sights!

The .380 is also called 9mm Kurz - Kurz is German for short.
While the bullet (projectile) is the same width, the 380 case is shorter than a 9mm case.

I might be interested in an Alpha Proj in 6", too. The 3" looks good!
I would take the unknown too it looks interesting. I suspect it takes full moon clips which is pretty much the only FAST way to reload a revolver when fine motor skills go south during tense situation.

I have a Pitbull in .40 S&W, and have put, oh, about 200-250 rounds thru it so far. Got it for my birthday last month. It shoots to point of aim, fired brass extracts easily and the recoil is not bad. It kicks a little more than a .38 Special +P, but less than a .357 Magnum from my 3" SP-101. (If you want recoil, we can try out my S&W 329PD together.) The Pitbull's trigger was a little gritty when new but it's smoothing in nicely with each pull of the trigger. When I'm plinking with it, I have no problem hitting fist sized rocks, pop cans and similar targets at ranges from 15 to 25 yards.

I really like the little gun so far and have no complaints or reservations about it. It's made here in the states by a company that employs American workers and I like that about it too.

Bad news

Just got a reply from Dee Ecker @ Charter Arms, the release date has been pushed out farther for the .45 acp Pitbull due to problems with frame size it is going to have to be redesigned. They are now saying next year minimum.:(

You have my condolences. I know how much I've anticipated the 9mm. I can only imagine how I'd feel if someone broke the news to me that it would be another year out, :(

Did they exacty when the 9mm would be available to distributors? I checked with Gallery of Guns (Davidsons) and it still show Out of Stock.

According to the e-mail they are 8-12 weeks out, also I was surprised but they wouldn't tell me the msrp, they recommended contacting a dealer, very strange.
