In a previous thread, described a cheap high scope mount for a Mosin Nagant 91 30 that cost very little, and allowed use of the iron sights and required only some (welding torch) bending of the stock bolt handle.

I've got other $$$ firearms, but I wanted to develop a model of a very cheap, fun, target and hunting rifle that local friends could put together.

Basically, wax the stock butt, then use 5-minute epoxy and several thicknesses of fiberglass cloth to mold to the top of the buttstock. Then wrap halfway up the wooden rest, trim, glue, dry, sand.

Size and position the cheekrest so the bolt can still be opened.

Since I dont' have a drillpress, made a drill-jig to guarantee parallel holes to hold 3/8" I.D. aluminum tubes parallel in the stock. (Otherwise, 3/8" bolts with heads cut off as rods, will bind.)

Drilled 3/8" holes through jig, rest, and into stock. Then removed rest and used jig ontop of stock and continued drilling. Then re-drilled to 1/2" to accept the aluminum tubes. Glued in with epoxy.

Glued the 3/8" bolts into rest, adjusted to fit the tubes (required a little forcing and trimming etc at first). Finally, added a threaded insert in the side to accept a 6-32 setscrew to fit filed flats on the rear dowel bolt.

Photos don't show the final color; just the prime.

100 and 200 yard targets using cheap equipment

Here are 3-shot 100 and 200 yard targets shot today with a 4x scope using the MosinNagant. Hand-loaded ammo, .3105 dia Hornady 174 grain HPBT (correction: FMJ - BT) bullets propelled by Varget in full length resized, then neck sized S&B cases. Repeating these tests with commercial S&B ammo resulted in groups of more than twice these sizes.

Note that at 25 yards, POI is roughly 1.5" low; at 100 yards, maybe 2" high; at 200 yards, an inch low. These numbers roughly match JBM Ballistics predictions for this bullet at 2200 fps with a 40-yard zero.

These group sizes were a miracle compared to what I was able to achieve with the iron sights when I first began working with this rifle.

Nice Groupings. I'm also working on a MN that I picked up at a show. Had an ATI stock stuck on it (not fitted). I fitted the stock and bedded the action and magazine ($10 for JB weld and pipe stock for pillars). Made a bolt handle from scratch (cost $10 to get welded). Shortened the barrel to 24" and recrowned. Made a scope mount from a Remington 1100 mount and bedded the mount for stability ($10 for the mount). Scope is 6x42 from a show for $30. Should be under $200 when finished depending on how I finish it, I'm thinking Duracote Camo.

It aint beautiful but it looks like its pretty effective :D
If that bolt handle ends up bugging you you can punch a whole thru the base of the bolt handle run a rod thru it and secure it with a screw. Then cut the handle off where you like and put a ball on the end of the rod. Finished up it works pretty well.

I cut up my mosin also lol, I did the slipper pad and a slipper cheek riser, as well as the rod thru bolt handle. I did end up buying a ATI scope mount tho, and replacing the screws with better quality ones. I think im into the gun for about 100 bucks now.

also as a note, a 1903a3 front sight is easy to modify for a nagant, and blades can be made from most anything.....hell i used a penny.

Had to run out to my shop to get pics. nowhere near finished yet. forgive the mess on my bench

no problem. I'm working on a adjustable cheek rest too. I have to re bed where the scope mount is. the person that stuffed the action into that stock butchered it when they clearanced it.

This is a Karsten's Custom Cheek Rest A-Model, that costs $60.

I paid $5 for the Mosin Nagant receiver, so I am open to any way to keep the cost down on cheek rests for Mosin Nagants.

Somewhere I saw a tape on cheek rest that fits over your own wood spacer.

Yep, I seriously considered that cheekrest. I just wanted to see how cheaply I could make something that work. I got the idea from someone else. It took a good bit of work but the results were quite satisfying and cost me almost nothing. It's something I might be able to get some of the older teens in my church to join up with and do for themselves. A friend warned me that even $129 might be too much for some of their families.

Clark, what did you have to do to get that barrel? Is it easy to get a barrel made for a Mosin? what is the thread?
