Cheaper Than Dirt Ammo Prices

Any company that puts out a regular catalog during times of rapid price swings is bound to have issues. if they are too low they will sell out quickly and people that didn't get any will accuse them of cheating. If they are too high they will sell a little and people will accuse them of gouging. Catalog sales are best for static cost items or very short time periods with the "while supplies last" logo.
I personally think CTD should have suspended the catalogs for a while and sent emails to their list explaining the situation. I always just toss them anyway since everything is online.

Actually, I personally still enjoy receiving the paper catalogs in the mail. I guess I'm just old school. Though I do a lot of buying on the internet, I still enjoy looking at paper catalogs too.

Don't get me wrong, I'd never purchase from CTD again. Their prices are crazy. But, that doesn't stop me from finding what I want in their catalog and then finding a cheaper supplier somewhere else. I say :neener: to CTD.

I remember back in the early 90s when the founder of CTD, Michael Tenny, would set up by himself at the Houston area gun shows with one table selling Norinco 7.62x39. His business card said "Sporting Goods Liquidator".

It is unfortunate that with the explosive growth of his company come business practices like the price gouging CTD is now infamous for.

Just my .02,

After dropping a couple of phones in the toilet, i quit browsing the net while on the throne. Paper catalogs still have their place

Especially once you are done on the throne.

i just picked up tula .380 brass cased boxer primed FMJ non corr made in italy for 14.99 at walmart in the afternoon. my wife was with me and we bought 6 boxes. so maybe the ammo shortage may be easing up some. eastbank.

Keep in mind the time lag between when the info in the catalog is submitted and when it shows up in the mail. It could be 8 weeks or maybe more.

Not that I find the CTD prices acceptable online either, but so far, this is still America, and I am free to buy or not, when and where I choose.

And lately I am choosing to buy no ammo.

I did not know that dirt was so expensive!

"Cheap as Dirt" disappeared long ago when Iowa farm land started going for $15,000 plus an acre. Guess increased ammo prices were bound to follow suit.

Just got an Email form them this morning, perhaps the market for gouging is collapsing:

Del-Ton stripped AR15 lower $99

30 rounds American eagle XM193 55gr on strippers $15.19

I buy on current price and availability, not prices when out of stock or times the market is panic crazy.

Yep the email I got this morning has DPMS AR-15s for $659 or so. Don't recall since I dumped the email but that is about the right price, give or take a few bucks, for that base model. I bought one a year ago for $599 locally so even after taxes it was much cheaper than having it shipped and paying an FFL transfer fee. Bushmaster and Colt were also only slightly higher than a year ago.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel(I hope). CTD will continue to get bashed and will continue to do business. I have never had a single problem with them but I haven't placed an order since sometime last summer. Their strategy during this shortage may not set well with people but I imagine they will continue to thrive.

Won't do business with them either. I got nailed on shipping in the past when two calibers had to come from different "warehouses". There was also a "handling" fee.

A number of months ago they wanted over $100 for a black rifle magazine.

You mean to tell me that the government just lets them set their own price for the items they sell? And that they don't stop them from over charging?

Say it ain't so!

Find somewhere else to shop. People will remember their high prices even when the ammo thing gets back to normal.

EXACTLY. That's why they are the pariah of the gun world. Maybe they follow the "there's a sucker born every minute" style of business. Unfortunately for them, the internet makes it real easy to read up and shop around. Consumers are getting smarter and smarter......and they are still focusing on ripping off a rube here and there for a few extra bucks.

Oh, is it already time for our hourly CTD thread?
Never too many in my opinion. If consumers would stop buying from companies that do this crap then maybe next time something like this happens their prices won't jump by 800%.

Just got their latest magazine, It went straight into the paper-shredder-pile,and along with the other papers I had to finsih shredding made nice fresh nesting material for the chickens,
From there, once saturated with poo,it will make its final trip to the compost pile to return from the earth in which it came

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
In CTD I will no longer trust !!

Cheaper than dirt isn't the only one gouging prices on ammo. Able ammo, The ammunition store and a few more. Blazer brass $30.00 a box at these places. I bought 8 boxes 4 yesterday and 4 today of Blazer brass at a whopping $12.95 a box. They had federal american eagle at $14.95 a box. Those companies who are gouging us, I'm done buying from them period. When this business of ammo is over, they can eat what they have left. :fire:

" Which leads me to believe CTD is ripping us off ".

You are just finding this out ?

I will never buy from them.

I was at a gun show in Allentown, PA this weekend. A dealer was TRYING to sell bricks of American Eagle 22LR ammo for $75 and he was trying to get $100 for Fiocchi bricks. I didn't see any sell at those prices. (thank goodness) Another dealer wanted $20 for 100 rounds of Rem Golden Bullets. Six hours later all 6 boxes were still on his table. When he saw me roll my eyes at the price he actually had the nerve to tell me I was spoiled because 22LR ammo has been too cheap for too long. I said nothing to him but I'm guessing not many agree with him since he sold nothing all day!

Sometimes I think people purposely over price their whole table at gun shows because they enjoy being the "grumpy old guy".

I am always disappointed when buyers jump to calling sellers "gougers". If an idiot agrees to pay such a price, who can stand and criticize their decision ? Until a sale is made, what is being gouged ?

I have over 40 years of retail store owner experience, and when I can buy something cheaper, I can sell it cheaper. When the supply is limited and demand is high, guess what happens ? It is simple economics.

So far, the seller is free to do any thing they choose with their products, and buyers are free to buy or not.

What is so hard to understand about a free market ?

You have Pre Sandy Hook and Post Sandy Hook, and the
Latter caused a lot of people to do a lot of stupid things;
Irrational thinking. Business is business, Pre Sandy Hook,
I bought 10mm (BRV ammo) around $19 per 50. Good
Range stuff. Now, would I be buying from them today,
No way. Everything goes in cycles, CTD aren't the only
Ones price gouging. People need to stop paying those
Prices as well.

which leads me to believe CTD is ripping us off at their prices.

Can't be doing that unless you are buying from them.

No one is gouging - there have been hundreds of threads about it - you are npt being forced to buy from them, or anyone, at all
