RIP Mark Wilson. I hope the young man you saved, amounts to something in life. He just might be a living memorial to you. God Bless You, Mark Wilson.

the world lost a valuable soldier in this ordeal, but by the words of his former coworker and media twisting his sacrifice will never be fully known to the world. that bold quote by his former associate, alluding that it was the guys destiny to die in a gunfight like he looked for one everyday or something.. was just innappropriate I felt and very disrespectful. the man put his life on the line for another of which he knew nothing about. at least a handful of people in this world will remember him for his noble actions and not try to capitalize on it and skew facts to further their own agendas.

I just can't stop wishing he'd grabbed a rifle when he heard the shots.

From the zwire article:

"Mark was heroic, there was no question about that," Wilbanks said. "If I had a gun I might have done the same thing but I wouldn't have moved in that close. His business was guns so he probably reacted quicker than the rest of us would have."

Bingo on two counts.

I salute Mark Wilson

This was a terrorist act, not just targeting one person, but all that were in the area. I suspect that with his background, Mark Wilson knew that he was facing armor. That makes his bravery even more admirable. We had better get used to this kind of thing, more is coming I'm afraid. We can only hope that more folks like Mark Wilson are around when the time comes. He was a credit to CCW freedom in my opinion, and this incident should point to even more CCW liberty. The cops were on scene here, and did not do much it appears, and who can expect more. Chasing down the bad guy after the fact does not protect anyone that was involved in the original event. If everyone with guns sits behind cover while a killing spree is conducted, the bad guys will have a field day with only small arms. They won't need bombs to kill many victims. With police are usually many minutes away, and likely to sit and survey the situation from outside, the only hope for any semblance of protection against mass murder is to have a large portion of the population armed and carrying. Not likely to encounter body armor, but if you do, better to try difficult shots than to be slaughtered without trying. We are all likely to be soldiers (targets) soon, in a war on our own land. I hope that we will be allowed to be armed soldiers. I intend to be.

The sheeple will hate him because he did NOT say 'It's none of my business ,I'm not getting involved' , he did NOT wait till someone gave him permission, he did NOT expect the Government to do it for him !!! As his friend said " he was a man's man".!!!

Memorial service for Mark Wilson

For those that may be able to attend, a public memorial service for Mr. Wison will be held today at 1:30 pm at the Tyler town square.

Not to diminish this threads "memorial and honoring" of Mr. Wilson but I have to wonder something. Would P.D. have known he was one of the good guys? Would they have opened fire on Mr. Wilson maybe thinking he was an accomplice or even the main perp. had they had a chance? Makes it even more heroic that Mr. Wilson faced this possible senario as well.

keitharsis, I think they would automatically assume the guy wearing body armor and shooting of an ak as fast as he could pull the trigger is the bad guy.

Mr. Mysterious -- I think a call to a "shooting" would bring P.O. to the scene thinking anyone, NOT LEO, with a gun, as potential perps.I remember during the LA bank robbery shootout there was confusion as to whether there were more than the two perps and I'm sure being all jacked up on adrenaline and running across anyone not LEO with a gun would possibly end up in a "freindly fire" situation.

This is not a flame at all, I myself am a CHL holder in Texas hope I would act as Mr. Wilslon, BUUUUT it has run across my mind as to how LEO would react in a shootout to anyone with a gun other than themselves.

Very complimentary story on Mr. Wilson in this morning's Austin American-Statesman, with the title saying he was a hero. Apparently, he heard the shots and came running out of his loft apartment.

Yes, this is why I carry an AK and a shotgun in my truck, but honestly, if I saw a guy start shooting people I'd have to:

1. Run back to the truck.
2. Unlock it.
3. Open front driver's side door.
4. Hit the "unlock" button.
5. Open the backseat door.
6. Open my long guns case, which has 4 latches on it.
7. Pull out the AK and a mag, load and cock it.

By then, it would probably be over with. This would probably only be worthwhile in some kind of prolonged engagement, and that sort of thing is something I'm going to leave to the cops. Unless it's a riotiing/looting thing, then I NEED my rifle/shottie.

The quickest tool I could respond with would be the Glock on my hip. (And I'm a "she"--people assume I'm a he when I mention hip carry, but I'm not.)

The lesson I'm learning from Mr. Wilson's heroic sacrifice is to quickly scan the BG to see if I think he's wearing body armor and to look for some HARD cover. If he's got body armor on AND I decide to take action, I would have to be close enough to get a good headshot, and I'd much, much rather do that from hard cover, unless I was only a few feet away (in which case a round of 165-grain .45acp Hydrashoks from my Glock 30 would most assuredly do the trick on the back of his head.)

Furious - there were several AP stories. The NY Times (amazing) had an AP story that clearly mentioned Wilson as a CHL and how he was brave, saved folks, etc.

Newspapers edit wire service stories. I was once interviewed on gun issues for the Newhouse syndicate. Most of the stories were carried straight but the New Orleans paper redid the title to something like Gun Nuts are Psycho. That wasn't the wire service title.

Our local news (in TX) made no mention of Wilson. It is clear that most news outlets will tend NOT to mention armed citizens in a positive light (Lott has proven this). However, sometimes, it's the outlet and not the service (not that they can't do this also).

It was the AP report on Saturday's paper on the web. The Sunday story didn't mention.

The Times is not progun. I wouldn't be surprised if an editor saw the original positive report and made sure it was gone.

I once wrote them a progun letter that made Al Gore's position on guns look silly. They called me and said they would print it and wanted to confirm who I was. It never made it and when I called them, they said it was space considerations. Hardy, Har, Har!
