civil unrest - what has your back ?

Pretty general scenario.

What would be my 'mission'?

Assuming I'm not part of the rioting group and I am at home a good pump shotgun would keep most critters on the right side of the door; I've got good fields and angles of fire covering all access points.

Out and about in the family vehicle my regular carry is a 45acp on the belt and a well tested AR style carbine behind the seat. The more open country I have to traverse, the greater the chance of finding a well used .30 bolt gun alongside.

Everybody will have their favorite brands and styles. For me it's more about knowing the gun will function when needed, hence the 'good', 'regular', 'well tested' and 'well used' descriptions.

If your follow-up is then "what ammo?", the answer is 'what works'.

You're here in a gun forum, accepted as a 'gun guy'. 45acp, 12 ga, 223win and .308/30-06 ammo is/are the most plentiful on the planet-I've got a good supply of my own.

Why do you need to seek advice on what should be obvious?

Bells and whistles aside, something that works (because you have tried it) in a popular (re plentiful) caliber/gauge is the only choice. Grab something and try it; if it doesn't work for you trade off for something else.

You stop when it feels right for you and that's a personal decision only you can make. Sorry, that's the best advice I've got. Sharing all my testing and success's or failures makes for a long boring and mostly useless story. It usually ends with a major manufacturer and my choice will draw immediate negativity from someone else who made a different choice or someone else who thinks they know more.

If name really makes that much difference to you I carry a Springfield (or sometimes a Smith, Kimber, Colt,Walther or Ruger), I like
Remington or Mossberg for short shotguns but have a Winchester, and several $$$ others, I've got AR's from several places (a couple custom) and I have Remington, Winchester, Savage, Ruger, and Weatherby well represented in the safe. All my guns are well tested-that's the most important part. Poor performers have been sent packing.

So depends on where you'll be, type of shooting you'll need to do. Long range, short range, city, rural, etc.. Every weapon has it's mission. I have .22's because I can stock a lot of ammo, and put them in the hands of novice shooters. Shot guns for many reasons. Long range rifles, short range carbines. fun question, but the answer lays with your personal need. Stay Prepped!

What I'd like to have is an M1 .30 Carbine with lots of magazines loaded with soft-points. But what I more likely will have is a Marlin 1894C and lots of loose ammo.

I don't want an "evil" looking gun that will draw attention to me in the early stages of collapse when the police haven't totally given up yet; an AK might be useful later.

Location is a big factor. When I hear "civil unrest," I don't think of rural locales and surviving in the woods. I imagine having to either defend or evacuate an urban or suburban neighborhood. Regardless, I would say a three gun match set-up would cover about any scenario. A centerfire handgun, mid-range rifle and shotgun.

None. I'll stick with the two German Shepards and a 12 gauge...

I would agree, but they are not bullet proof.

I believe in the right tool for the right job, so carry a selection.

If this is a protracted breakdown in society, you're gonna want a good .22 eventually (for hunting rabbits and squirrels if nothing else)

(I'm impressed that nobody has used the word "zombie" yet. Let's keep it that way ;) )

I'll answer this thread before it gets moved or shut off. I live on a dead end road and my 'back is covered'. In the front I erected 16 concrete road barriers in a semi-circle with 5 gun ports stacked on top of each other 6 feet high. I have full view of three corners down the road for 1 mile. I have a Cat D4 with dozer blade a quarter mile down to road to block access if necessary. My son and family who live 100 yards away have a clipped 50. cal under a Night Force optic. Between the two of us we have a Remington VTR 308 with 15XSS and 4 AKs with 3500 rnds. All have Aimpoints, Eotechs. Two AR-15s with 1000 rnds with Burska red dots but in this part of the country most of us are packing the AKs.
I have been prepared since the computer scare in 1999. Big Garden, lot of concrete, ammo, toilet paper, and yes Spam. They don't call me Bunker Bob for no reason.
For all you that don't take it serious and wish things had been different, just remember this post. It could be your eye awakener!!!

I think a moderator is going to smite this thread, unless the OP clarifies the original scenario. With my Remington 870 x 2, Mini-14 x 2, and several larger-bore manual repeating rifles, I do not think I need a special rifle for social occasions.

I guess it could depend on where you are located when and if the SHTF? AR or AK but I would pick whatever I was more proficient with handling. Try to be upwind of that there fan if possible.

Mobility is the key. My jeep is ready to take my family anywhere we need to get. Right now we are in a large urban area so getting back to the sticks is our main concern. My 870 is my most trusted platform for just about anything. Where it drops off my PX4 in .40 and my ar(breed) will gladly pick up. Mobility and versatility. And water

Rexster said "Comments that indicate we wish to participate in the civil unrest are not High Road."
No one wants to participate but you might not have a choice. It is taking the High Road to defend yourself. It is taking the High Road to be prepared. It is not taking the High Road to poo poo that scenario off like it couldn't happen under any circumstances.
And no one can take on an Abrams M1. What a stupid comment. The civil unrest to be prepared for are defending you and your family from the drug addicts, ingrates, and the hungry that will be moving out of the cities looking for money, food, drugs, contraband and to do harm against you and yours. Many people do not want to even talk or think about it.

It sounds fair. Civil unrest happened alot more recent than the 80s. Madame Katrina; had a real affect on how I view society in a trying situation. For those of you who werent there, it was much more grim than what the news told you. There will be takers and there will be defenders. As long as you are a defender of your own, there are no qualms. But if you want to know how to cause or best participate in the unrest, stand away.

No sir. I will be taking me and mine lighty to one of my properties around this land. Couple in the north one in the central and one in the south. All very well off the beaten path. I'm not looking for trouble, just peace and quiet. Lol
