hey! I got a service grade M1 Garand for my dad for his birthday and I want to set it up with like bayonet, a bandolier of shiny ammo on clips, cleaning kit etc. Anyone got any ideas? I think I'm gonna get him one of those GI garand cases too.

Just give it to him in the box it came in after you remove any shipping info. Wrap it in regular wrapping paper and watch his eyes. If you insist on the other stuff, wrap it separately. The look in his eyes when he opens the rifle box will stay with you forever. Nothing else will matter.

Well, I do believe it will have to be transffered to him through an FFL, since you two are in different states. But I'd imagine that can be done after you present it to him.

I think the plain in box idea is the best. He'll have no idea what is coming. Hide the cleaning kit in the buttstock. Maybe put the bayonet in the box as well. Present him with the bandoleer after he gets over the gun.

Oh, and have someone videotape it.

I kinda want to get a fancy case or something to put it in...

I'll do that as soon as I'm done paying income tax off the money I earned mowing lawns when I was 15.

Seriously, he's eligible to own one and as far as the law is concerned, it's still mine.

Give him a U.S. flag with it too. Won't cost much more and will remind him what other costs were included with this rifle.

hey! that's a great idea! I've got a spare one sitting around actually and I dont think my parent's have a US flag.

It'd look neat for a display folded up next to the rifle anyhow.

btw, how does plain ol' white box winchester shoot in a garand? I've been thinking of using some of that for the little display bandolier he's getting with the M1.

I don't know specifically about the white box ammo, but I can say that you need to be a little careful about what you shoot in an M1. Being gas operated, that rifle was designed to work with a specific ammunition, M2 ball.

The ammo you propose to use may be okay, but if it is too hot it may break or bend the operating rod, and if too wimpy may not cycle the action properly. As it happens, there is good surplus M2 available right now, both American and Korean. The Lake City M2 sold by CMP is especially good.

On your ammo question, Federal has stated that their American Eagle brand of FMJ (150-Gr) is OK to use in the M-1, and the "Gold Medal Match" with the 168-gr Sierra Match King bullet is also acceptable.

Hmmm

Can't find the e-mail right now, but that was the gist of the message

ammo

I would agree about the ammo. Anything close to 150 grains is best. I would not shoot anything over 170 grains in a Garand.

Where do you live? I'm reading Western US, from the 'drive across America'

Stop in the North store, and pick one up on the way there. That way, you can also look over the one you are buying.

Plus, they still have Service Grades in stock (at least, Greeks). They have no marks that mark them as Greek, though.

Ah. Is it possible to switch your order to a Greek service grade? When I was at the store a few weeks ago, there was a 700 rifle backorder on the US Service grades, and they wern't sure it would be filled.

The Greeks are still available. Nothing to distinguish them from a USGI gun, except some have had a replacement stock. Like the guy at the store said, once the inventory tag comes off, no one can tell. You can always buy a Boyds replacement stock to put on it, if you do draw one of the fat Greek ones, or buy two rifles, incase one has the Greek stock, and then you can swap it out with the other. Plus, you then end up with one.

I feel for you though.

I'm gonna call em up this morning when my shift ends. It's rediculous that there are 700 rifles on backorder when they are still advertised as in stock.

PS: I changed my order to a $500 greek service grade a while back. - These are the ones that they said were on backorder. I guess all of the rifles are starting to dry up quicker!

I also ordered an M1903 for myself. That one should be here on time though. :scrutiny:
