Pocket pistol people, Question what is the difference in frame size between the 1848 Baby Dragoon 1849 Pocket 1862 Pocket Police, and the 1862 Pocket Navy? I know .31 & .36 rebated frame?
I am thinking I need something smaller than my Navy !

It's the exact same frame with a lowered water table to accept the .36 cal cylinder.

Here is a pic of the difference in frame size. On the left is a '62 Pocket Police and on the right is a '51 Navy. Both, of course, are 36 calibers.

I see an Avenging Angel Snub Nose 36 caliber five shooter in the near future, maybe we'll see it over on the Avenging Angle board...?

The 1st Generation 1849s had 1-3/4' frames versus the 1-5/8" frames of the 1848 Models. The longer frame was used for the .36 caliber pocket models. But if memory serves, all the reproductions use the shorter 1-5/8" frame regardless of model or caliber.

By 1st generation do you mean the original Colt pistols?

Is it literally a scaled up/down difference or are lengths increased/decreased?

I have thought the Police with the 3.5" barrel w/o a loading lever with a bobbed hammer and grip (not quite a bird's head) would be pretty cool.

The three Ubertis I checked - a Pocket Model, Pocket Navy and Pocket Police - all have the 1 3/4 inch frame.

Thanks Fingers McGee. I seem to remember Doctor Davis mentioning something like that, maybe it was the earlier ASMs?

Someday I'd like to get a couple of .31 cal, six shot, ASM Pocket Models for plinking with my kids.

This is a Replica Arms/El Paso Texas (ASM) 1848 Colt Pocket .31 6-shot repro, 6" barrel with load lever (manufacture date 1963). It has the longer forcing cone/longer frame as opposed to the short forcing cone/shorter frame on the 1848 "Wells Fargo" (a misnomer) model without the load lever. One might want to refer to Norm Flayderman's books for pictures and descriptions. I don't have any dimensions for the frames/forcing cones, but one can discern which is which just by looking at photos of originals/replicas, and they are not interchangeble.

From what I read over the years all the original (1st Generation) ..31 revolvers that were factory converted to cartridges were converted to .38. They just milled the frames with a stepdown to make the conversion. I have never read anything on different frame lengths between the 1848's and 1849's-1862 Pocket Pistols though. That is until this thread.

I used to have one with a short barrel with the original hammer and grip but sold it.

Gaucho Gringo; That's a sweet, sweet snub nose 38 Avenging Bulldog (5 shot) Or maybe bulldogs are supposed to be 44 caliber 5 shot??

A sweet rig would be a Uberti Pocket Police with a 3 1/2 or 4 1/2 inch barrel.

I would get one but I'm more into the 44 calibers and their big fat brass front sights that I can see.

Ist Gen .31 Cal pocket pistols were converted to .32 cal rimfire and center fire. The 1862 Pocket Navy and Pocket Police models were converted to.38. The .31 cal 1848/1849 pocket model barrels would have to be replaced or bored out in order to shoot .38s.
