Colt Producing New Model 1903 Pistols

Looks good to me but not interested in a 380 . If I could buy one for what I have on hand maybe ... take out a loan for a hunk of history I do not think so ...

Thats really neat, such a limited run though is disappointing. Wonder what the pricing will be though.

I'd really like this.

I was considering the Tomcat - assuming Beretta can fix the frame cracking problem, but I'd buy a 1903 in a heartbeat - except, if they're just making $2,000 collector's pieces I'll pass.

I'm guessing the price will be somewhere between 'ridiculous' and 'obscene'. They have to make a profit after a substantial investment in tooling and development, and if they are doing a limited run, the prices are going to reflect that.

I think they could sell a lot of them, if they cared to. Make it in .380 instead of .32 and put the sights in dovetails so they can be replaced.

Maybe they will make more if these do really well. They just don't listen to us, "their consumers". Bring back the Python, DS, the 1903 and other guns that we actually want instead of another single stack 9mm, or a new AR or other gun that has been done to death. It can be done if they tried, they just showed us that they can, what are they going to use the tooling for after the initial run?

Colt is doomed.

Two thousand five hundred pistols priced at $1400 a pop is going to save the company?

Seriously?

I honestly can't believe some of the things Colt decides to do. I looked at their product lineup recently and they make literally 2 firearms. TWO! One is the AR 15 in various configurations, and the other is the 1911 in various configurations (full size, commander, compact). There are other 22 caliber guns sold under the colt name that are made by Walther or Uberti or something. Listen to the consumers! Make GI 1911's, snake guns, model 1908 (380 ACP), make a reproduction single action army! There are tons of people (myself included) that would be willing to throw cash at them to have a piece of the colt legacy, which used to symbolize unmatched quality and innovation.

...because bringing back an old design worked so well for Remington...
As we have seen from the 1911 and AR 15, it's not that hard to copy a design from the original spec sheet and make it work. Heck, Filipinos can make 1911 clones in the jungle by hand with limited tools and resources, and they work just fine. And the 1911 isn't exactly an easy gun to get to run well.

Remington fell prey to 3 things:
-they didn't stick to the original design
-everything is about the bottom dollar, so they didn't spend enough on R&D or quality control
-the design they chose didn't work that well to begin with

I have an old 1903 and a Mustang why do I want a new version that costs more of the same guns?

Did they ever move in to the big property they bought here in Florida?

What I don't know about manufacturing and marketing could fill the Atlantic Ocean, but does it really make sense to tool up just to produce 2500 guns? Isn't it more likely that the "limited run" is supposed to lure in the high-dollar collectors and recoup the tooling costs, and then the '03 and '08 will join the line-up quietly, in standard versions, to start to earn their keep?

I would buy one in the $500 to $700 range, but I wouldn't go into the price range where you can get a nice "real" one that will have some sense of history to it.

Good that Colt is trying something different. Bad that they're trying to capitalize off of making it "limited edition" and jacking the prices up.

That's a band-aid. If they can't make something that a lot of people actually want and can sell them at some reasonable volume then they're not going to pull themselves out of the slump they're in.

You can usually buy one of the original model 1903 Pocket Pistols in like-new condition, for around $800 or less, and it will likely have the classic blue rather then sandblast & Parkerized finish. I suspect this will be like the current Single Action Army line that is produced in limited numbers for the benefit of deep-pocketed customers. It couldn't compete against the current crop of polymer mini-pistols that retail for half the price or better in the regular market.

For those that want one bad enough to pay the suggested price this is welcome news, but I doubt they're is enough of them to support large volume production and sales.

The only way I can see that is to make the pistol (or parts) out-of-country.

I'm in for one...even if I have to sell a couple I already have (Colt 1903's) I'll have one of the new ones. To understand what this really is and how cool, one has to be a real lover/aficionado of the original Colt 1903 model M.

This is the coolest news and I'm grateful for the heads up.

you can pick up originals for that and less now...
I know -- I have one that I paid $500 for. The finish is in good but not great shape. I'm seeing over $1000 for really mint ones on Gunbroker, so if I could get a brand-new one for a couple of hundred less, I would do it -- if it had a blued finish.

Are they really going with Parkerized? I didn't look carefully enough at the link. That's too bad. I guess it's to be faithful to the military designation, but the old bluing was really primo.

I'd think trying to replicate the old blue with hand polish could easily double the cost of producing the gun.....if they can even get enough skilled craftsmen to do that caliber of work.

I have purchased 4 original Colt 1903's last year paying (on Gunbroker and GunsAmnerica) in the $500 range for guns that need work. You can find good shooters for $500 - $700 but pristine/like new with a box? Rock Island Auction moves a few of them every auction that are pretty much like NIB but you won't touch one for $700. Mint pistols in the box? $1K+

$1395 for a brand new base model, in the box? I'll do that....I hope there is a reserved list but I'll bet they sell out before I can get my name on it.

I have almost as much in this pistol:

Granted, that one is custom/one off and has a Street Tune and hard chrome but I'd easily go $1400 for a brand new parkerized Pocket Hammerless from Colt. I'd shoot that Bad Girl too....:what:
