I have a XD service 9mm and a 1911 Officers model. I carry both but tend to carry the 1911 more. After carrying for almost a year I'm starting read more tactical books, most books stress that what/how you train is how you will react in a SD situation. I'm starting to worry that the slight difference between these 2 pistols, one has a manual safety the other doesn't. That if I had to draw my pistol in SD that I could have trouble. Either forgetting to take the safety off or trying to find a safety that is not there.

Anybody else have these concerns? Or am I worrying over nothing?

Can you shoot them both well? Do you practice with both? Can you drive two different cars equally well? I would not worry about it. If you practice with both you will be fine. There is, of course, merit to your question. Question is, is it enough to worry about? I shoot my 1911's the most and that is what I carry. Yep I guess I worry about it too. :)

I tend to agree with others that enough practice/training will probably smooth out the transition.

One thing I am certain of is that most persons will default to their training habits if they don't freeze up in a stressful situation. Personally, I get greater peace of mind from having the same manual of arms to make a pistol work - draw and shoot. This means I can carry my XD, or my Beretta with the safety off, and as long as I produce the gun from the holster and squeeze the trigger I'll get a boom. YMMV.

I have two different carry guns, a 1911 and a double action Smith and Wesson. I don't worry about it. When you grab the gun you recognise the feel and automaticly do what is necessary.

I do the same thing, carry mainly 1911 commander or Kahr P45. Both very different pistols. I train with both and have not had a problem in training switching between them. As for the 1911 safety, I get into the habit of sweeping my thumb down when drawing either firearm. It doesn't hurt the DAO and keeps me in the groove for the 1911. You are worrying about nothing, unless you don't practice with either.

I do practice with both. I'm just starting to work on drawing from the holster and accruing my target. I can't do that on the range so I have been practicing at home and dry firing. At the range I start with my pistols at low ready with the safety on (for the 1911) and bringing the pistol up and firing. I also practice the drawing a firing with and airsoft 1911.

Memory why confuse yourself with different carry guns. Pick one and stick with it.

Changing for reasons of I may need more or better is a fantasy.

I have seen some instances during a IDPA competition and in a shooting class where people that carry several different types of firearms loose valuable seconds when they forgot to flip off the safety. The did not realize the problem when the trigger was pulled multiple times.

I would stick to one platform.

+1 on 'stick to one platform'

Lots of margin of error in switching from one action to another type of action. I've been driving my corolla-manual transmission for 2 years and I do forget to put the tranny in neutral prior to ignition starting. And sometimes I forget to disengage the handbrake when I engage the tranny. And Im talking of 1 car 24/7 not 2 different types of vehicles.

Murphy's law, my guiding rule.

I have carried both.

I've not found myself trying to fire a 1911 without releasing the safety but I swipe that off during the draw. I do the same with the XD even though there is no safety. My finger off the trigger is my safety when I am about to shoot (with either gun).

I grew up with safeties before shooting an XD. Might be a problem if it were the other way around though?

I sometimes run low on ammo for one or the other. It's nice to be able to put off resupply and still carry with full magazines.
