confused: I am considering compact .45 for concealed carry and was wondering if anyone had any recommedations from practical experience? I am thinking that I will be looking at DA/SA, first trigger pull is DA. Then the rest are SA. That way I won't have a 'cocked & locked' pistol in my pocket or smartcarry. Any ideas? Any and all recommedations appreciated. Thanks for your time;).

Don't know if you'll think its small enough but the Sig P220 carry fits the bill as far as mechanics goes, a used P245 would work too. A kahr is double action only if you wanted really small and the triggers are smooth as butter.

Never thought I would say this but...

I've been carrying a full size 1911 for the past two years. Mind you, I don't carry all day, everyday because the law and my employer have restrictions on my 2nd Amendment rights. That said, I carry the 1911 when I do carry.

However, I've been thinking that the second carry criterion for me (after reliability) is not turning over a $1000 handgun to the police if I ever do have to defend myself while carrying. Yes, my life is worth $1000, but...

So, I bought this Taurus Millenium a few months back and to date have 400 bangs through it with no quirks or concerns. After another 100 rounds of the same, I'm going to start carrying it.

Yep, your thinking is exactly why I went with the small 1911 Colt Defender 45cal

Grip is just right, not to small (height) not wide (never were with single mag)

And the beaver tail makes shooting it, a joy, as well as a great beater, if you ever used it (after your ammo runs dry) or however it came to be.

But, whatever the reason, I agree with the above quote 100%

Here's to CCW locked and cocked, as it doesn't get any better IMO.

The new Sig P220 compact is just like the old P245, but with a beaver tail added. I think they look neat, and I like my P226, so that's the way I'd go.

They have that one, a two tone, and now a two-tone SAO, and SAS version which should be DAK (form of DAO) with two tone dehorned slide.

If you're not into Sigs, there's always more choices.

HK

And no one is allowed to say: "Hk has bad customer service." Because that has changed.

USP Compact or the p2000/p2000sk. Best .45's I have ever shot. Very durable and honestly not that bad on price. You can get new .45's for just over 700 or used between 500-650.

I have both a Defender and a PT145, although the PT145 is only 2 weeks old, so I haven't had a chance to get it to the range, but if it turns out to be reliable and accurate, it will end up being my carry piece. There is absolutely nothing wrong with my Defender, I love it. Which is why I would hate to have to hand it over if there was a problem. They both are fine for carry because of their size, now if the Taurus performs as well as I have heard, it should give me more rounds in a smaller package.

Just my 2 cents

Also Taurus, but a PT-745 for summer carry. It weighs a little less at 20 oz and is slimmer (single stack 6 +1) than it's big brother, the PT-145. Rest of the year, XD45Compact.

eleven posts into the thread and here it comes.....

SORRY!!! I'm going to be THAT guy...but what about a Glock 30/36. I know it's not DA/SA but it's not a SA 1911 style that you're uncomfortable with. But seriously that new 220 is the best in terms of what you asked in a compact .45

How far we have come from the days

when we pined for the Right to carry, much less worry about having a cheap and good carry gun for fear of having it confiscated if it's used.

At any rate, about the OP topic: I had a chance to finally try two Para LDA 1911s today--the first in a wide .45ACP, and the second in a Commander-sized .40.

That trigger alleviates any of my concerns about lawyer hassles over SA triggers, 'ADs;' and other arguable 1911 issues. I adapted immediately to it. However, neither Paras were cheap / reliable guns we'd not regret having confiscated. Cost aside, it really does come down to personal belief about reliability, I guess.

I blew up a Glock 20 once--and I simply cannot bring myself to carry plastic guns, no matter what brand or caliber. OTOH, I no longer want to carry a 1911 as I once did--so I've settled on the S&W 340. It's light enough so I will carry it daily and not worry about it--but should do the job with enough practice. Which is why I also bought a 640 to practice with.

The Colt Lightweight Officers Model is another great choice. I've been carrying cocked and locked 1911s for about 15 years with no problems.

Glock 36! It hides well, dead on accurate, 900 rounds so far and no hiccups!

my vote is P245, try it out! Also try the USPc45(I have the CTv1 model & LOVE it), can't wait till the HK45c come on the market!
