Concealed carry in NC not worth it?

It is very much worth it. Pistol Puchase Permits are the most redunt gun law on the books, If you plan on buying more than a few handguns, being able to buy a firearm without Puchase permits and the call in is worth it alone. Not including the peace of mind of worring if a firearm can be considered "concealed" by the police. Most of the places I go do not prohibit CCW and the few ones that do I am not in very long. Also I have never recieved a warning for a traffic stop in my 8 years of driving, The last time I was stopped I followed procedure, was thanked for it and given a warning, even though he could have wrote me a few tickets easily. It could be coincidence, but I think it was a great investment.

Tinpig:

Unfortunately, here in OH, our Politidiots have included the Post Office on THEIR list of free fire zones.... It's a Felony....

Which leads to a question: I use stamps.com to print my postage for about anything but packages that are too large to fit in the drive-up slot. The Post Office rules say I'm a Branch Post Office! So, can I carry in my own office? :D

Not to start another thread, but the reasoning provided in your post may not be an accurate interpretation. I've seen it both ways.... My vote is that you're correct, but YMMV, and your state may have it's own nasty surprises there, too.

There's also a bit of craziness with regard to School Zones. A non-resident license is NOT Federally honored in a School Zone. It's only valid in the issuing state.... The way the law seems to be written, you really can't carry when driving by a school.... (From a practical standpoint, you can ignore this unless you get arrested for something else....) Meantime, here in OH, the State has chosen to upgrade the Federal law, which seems to at least allow transit of the parking areas by licensees (OK, OH licensees) to lock us out there, too....

(We did get the ability to pick up or drop off our kids, but not spouses or significant others, and there's some grey areas in getting out of the car to put little Johnnie into a booster seat, or help little Susie if she falls down. You still can't leave your weapon in the vehicle, which means that if Ms. Witchbreath wants you in the office posthaste, or if your youngster needs to be rescued from the Nurse, you have to run home and ditch the gun first....)

The really fun part is explaining this to somebody who's not from OH, or, in some cases, to Ohio LEO's who don't know about some of the aracana....

Regards,

Yes, the NC permit could be better. Everything, everywhere could be better. Unfortunately, fixes aren't going to come any time soon, if ever.... but we will keep trying.

Regarding restaurant carry ... not that big of a deal if you stop eating out and use the money you save for ammo. Whenever I'm faced with a "Is the experience of ________ worth being disarmed and unable to defend myself?" question, the answer is usually "no".

stevemis:

She Who Must Be Obeyed demands a restaurant visit about once a week. The "save the money for ammunition" suggestion doesn't work. If she finds out how much that costs, I'm back to selling shoelaces....

When I least expect it, she picks one of about three half-decent restaurants in the area that don't serve. Otherwise, the car is a gun mine....

On the plus side, I injured my feet a couple weeks ago, and ended up with a cane. I'm going to keep it.... I don't think I look it, but I'm old enough anyway :D....

Our current Governor probably would sign a bill killing that restriction, but I'm not sure he's going to get one anytime soon, and I don't think he'd demand it....

Someday....

Regards,

There is one thing I really LIKE about NC firearms laws: There is no distinction in any law concerning loaded or unloaded guns. I know some states have sticky and confusing laws about in the pipe vs. empty chamber; mag loaded but not in the gun vs. unloaded mag, etc. I'm glad we don't have to worry about any of that. See? Even my post is confusing to read.

Ohio is working on repealing its restaurant ban.

I carry everywhere it's lawful to do so. I'm from Chicago and know what it's like to be a legislated victim and not be able to defend myself. Being able to carry one hour a day in a phone booth is better than that.

SC too!!

The CCW law in SC is roughly the same as NC. So, I do not have a permit. They are a little more lenient if you do not have a permit. believe or not.

The Federal buildings, schools etc. are strictly enforced. Almost everyone carries in there vehicles here..

It's worth it.

I can legally carry a gun in Walmart, the mall, gas stations, etc. That alone is worth it.
Not carrying in restaurants is no big deal.
The thing that bugs me more is not being able to carry into places where you have to pay admission, such as the movie theater.
I'm not worried about anything in the theater, but going to and from the car is when it's dangerous.

Is it worth it. You have to make the decision between betting your life on never needing it, or going through the steps and inconveniences of your particular location.

If you don't see the need for a gun...then I hope you never see the need for a gun because at that point it just might be the last thing that you ever see.

As someone from FL contemplating moving to NC, I appreciate this thread. Clearing up a lot for me in regular English instead of trying to figure out what the hell the law is actually saying.

I visit there frequently enough too that it's been a headache.

What's the deal with some of these laws? Are they laws that have been around for a long time when some of this stuff may not have been construed as super important? I think I remember hearing the pistol purchase permit was to stop certain people from buying guns and is now a hassle more than anything.

That is a valid point. Here in Missouri you are allowed to carry your gun concealed in your car anytime. You can even conceal carry on your person in your car.

It's a Jim Crow law. The laws are written to allow the local Sheriff to decide who can and can't have a gun, with no cause whatsoever. These days, I don't think very many Sheriffs actually USE it this way, since they'd get called on it pretty quickly, but it's still there, hassling people for no reason.

"No Guns for Negroes" explains a lot of this quite well, and is worth a watch.

Purchase permits are a Jim Crow law.

I was only 14 when NC went shall-issue (IIRC, it was no-issue before that). From what I've heard a few folks say they had to slowly chisel away at where we could carry to get it passed.

IOW, when it didn't get to the governor's desk, they added another restriction. Eventually there were enough.

Worth it? I think so. I carry most places I go. I don't really avoid places I cant carry, just don't need to go very often. Except for work...
