Confiscated Guns for Sale?

Hey I don't know where to stick this, so I'm guessing here? Anyway, some of you may be aware of my budgeted odyssey to hunt for a new (or used) rifle under $200 chambered for a round between .223 Rem and .30-06. A new idea occurred to me recently, namely if I could get a decent gun at a confiscated property auction. The problem is that I don't know where to go to get police confiscated guns/surplus firearms. I'd like a brick-and-mortar location in Oklahoma or Texas, or if not, at least a website... anything would help.

Summary--

--Looking for a rifle, .223 Rem to .30-06, preferably a repeater

--Need one under $200

--Leaning towards a surplus/confiscated gun

--What brands should I look for? What brands should I avoid? (I've been told Jennings and Raven pistols are crap, but what about rifles?)

--If you know where to go in Oklahoma or Texas, or want to make a deal, post here or send me a message.

Oh and one more thing-- I'm also looking at maybe getting a Ruger 10/22 if the rifle I discussed above doesn't cost too much.

I don't know anything about confiscated property auctions, but I believe it will be very difficult to meet your goal within the price range. I believe your best hope would be surplus military in less than optimum condition.

Sorry to be the one to tell you this, but there's no such thing as a "confiscated property auction." At least, not the way they are advertised. You show up, there's some Persian guys with Dali prints, rugs, stuff like that. Prices are usually set at minimums and they know what the merchandise is worth. These aren't "scams" as such - you can find some bargains - but it's highly unlikely you'd get a better deal than you can find online. The reality is that good guns aren't cheap and they hold their value well.

Well I know my grandfather used to go to some sheriff's auctions or something up in Oklahoma way back in the day, and he bought a few decent guns there. Maybe I'm calling it the wrong thing? I know that some police departments choose to sell off guns rather than melt them down, and I was kinda looking to see if I could pick up one of those. I don't care if it's pretty as long as it shoots okay.

Grandpa and the sellers in his day and age did not have the Blue Book.
Anybody can come up with a dollar number on a gun and it is usual to look only at the left-most number even if the gun is not in top condition.

Our Game & Fish Department holds an auction every 2 years. I used to go to them but eventually realized auction fever grips the bidders. I have never seen any firearm go for less than I could buy the same thing from a gun shop, and then I would have some kind of a return option if it turned out to be a lemmon.

There are few things that I would ever go cheap on and fire arms are not on that list. I truely enjoy my 10 fingers, 2 arms and 2 eyes far to much than to buy a cheap gun because it was cheap... Only my Mosin will be the cheap $100 rifle that I own. I like the shape and function of my body to much to cheap out on something like that.

If you want to get an inexspensive rifle, get a 597 or a 10-22. I've seen both at my local Dix for ~$200 or just over (like $230 with a scope on a 10-22) and start there. Any high powered rifle for that price besides the Mosin I would steer clear of.

That's just me though.

I'm afraid the only thing in your price range is a Mosin Nagant you may get lucky and find a used Hi-Point Carbine in that range. You'll have to search long and hard but you never know you may get lucky.The closest pistol of any quality in your range is a 9mm Tokarev. Just my opinions though. I can't remember the name(foreign made) but there is a semi auto .22 rifle that are going for approx.$130. Maybe someone knows of the rifle I speak of. Good luck in you're search.

There's no brick & mortar "store", many PDs that used to sell off confiscated & court condemned guns have stopped doing it from PR concerns, the ones that do just hold their auctions at the PD, typically. Those can be irregularly scheduled.
They'll usually put out some sort of notice, I'm not aware of any that advertise extensively or post lists on websites.
You don't go looking for specific items, you just go & see if anything they have meets your interest.
No centralized clearing house.

Not a highly organized process, bidding can & does run some guns over actual value.

If you are looking for sales of confiscated items I would suggest watching your local paper. I have seen sales advertised in the legal notices section in the past IIRC. There was an auction of confiscated items here a while back & the paper did a write up on it. If you want an inexpensive .22 I would suggest looking around for a used Marlin model 60 they are good guns & can be found very reasonable priced.

Around here various gun shops bid on lots from property rooms then put the items on the floor if they win the bid. Lawmans and Palmetto Firearms are the two main ones. I've gotten some good deals that came out of property rooms, like a stainless Camp 9 for $175 in excellent condition and a MAK90 in excellent condition for $269.

Here's a site where different government agencies auction surplus and confiscated firearms, and just about everything else. No guns right now,but they've been there before and they'll be there again.
I just picked up a pretty nice Mosin M44 for $75 at a local shop, and I see the occasional SKS for around $200, but $89 M91/30 Mosin Nagants are all over the place, and that just has to be the best buy in a decent rifle there is today.
If you want a good, cheap .22, I see used Marlin model 60s for less than $100 all the time. Hell, Wal Mart sells a stainless model 60 with a scope for well under $200, IIRC.
