I'm a North Carolina CHL holder, so I know (or thought I knew) all about the various restrictions and "no-carry zones". However, this week my wife has gone back to school part-time at the local county Technical Community College, hopefully to transfer to NC State in the spring.

I went with her down to the college earlier this week to go to the bookstore. Now it's my usual assumption that College = School = No Guns within 1000 feet, so I did not carry, not even in the car.

However, as we were walking into the bookstore, I noticed a large "No Concealed Weapons" sign of the standard type seen on government buildings and some businesses here. I didn't see any other signs anywhere else except the door of the campus bookstore. This confused me a bit. Why the sign if the entire campus is no-carry? Am I incorrect in that assumption? Can any NC'ers help me out? I tried to look it up on packing.org but the site appears to be down at the moment.

Have to check state law. Here in AR you can carry on school grounds but not in any building or at any sporting event. When I lived in UT I carried on campus all the time and it was legal. Back then UT had no signage law but I don't know about the law now. Some states allow posting of no carry signs and some don't. Again, you need to check state law in your state.

Maybe the college popsted the sign just to remind people that they can't legally carry? Of course, the nut jobs and murderers don't obey the laws.

You cannot CCW at any state or privately funded college. The reason they had a sign at the book store was most likely to inform visitors who may not be familiar with the rules/laws about CCW on a college campus.

Your wife can certainly continue to CCW (many people do while going to college) but the sad thing is- let's say she defends herself and shoots a looney on a rampage (and also saves the lives of other students). Although she would have lived and saved others- she would be (at very least) expelled from school and lose her CCW license. You just have to weigh the benefits to the risks.

College = School = No Guns within 1000 feet

This may be the source of your confusion. In some (many? most?) states, colleges and universities are not included in state laws that prohibit guns on school property. Most states define a school as a primary/secondary school and exclude institutions of higher education. Colleges are free to make their own rules. Here in VA, there is no state law prohibiting guns on college campuses, but every state college has a no guns on campus (except for LEO's) policy in place. Violating the policy will get you expelled if you're a student or charged with trespassing if you're a non-student.

Buck00- You referring to PA? Your statement is not correct if you mean all state colleges in the country. At least two states allow on-campus carry that I know about.
