I need that picture of Barney Fife and his one bullet.
Truth of the matter statistics do show most engagements are with in 3' and over inside of 3 seconds with less than 3 rounds expended. That being said I do not feel undergunned carrying my S&W with only six and a speed strip.

Remember each round you fire has a lawyer attached! Shot placement is key, so pick a platform you like and practice!

I think that's more of a cliche than a stat.

I wouldn't say that, but it's a classic example of "garbage in, garbage out."

The stat is skewed because it includes suicides, warning shots, AD's, animal put-downs, etc.

In any case, if you ever need to actually use your gun, you can't know in advance how many shots, if any, you'll need to fire. The average might be X. How much do you want to count on your incident being average?

The first part---"most", and 3, 3, and 3--has been well addressed. One would not be very prudent to prepare for "most" situations, considering the stakes, unless that "most" really meant something close to "virtually all". That one doesn't.

Carrying a speed strip is probably not a bad idea, but I would not count on being able to use it.

Finally, one may not "feel" undergunned at all--but that wasn't the question.

This thread prompted member JohnKSA to run some numbers based on an arbitrary threshold defining success (two hits on each attacker, one or two determined attackers). The results surprised him, and they surprised me. See this.

Capacity

Confrontations last "3 seconds". I suspect that may be correct. I'd also suspect that some shooters would shoot you close to 20 times in the chest in that amount of time. Most anyone that has practiced would be able to "point fire" AND HIT YOU at least 10-15 time in 3 seconds at the average confrontational distance. Look at Police shootings, the distance is usually greater and the hit probability goes down. However, it seems the media always reports that the Police fired "umpteen" rounds in the confrontation. It does not take long to fire 10-15 rounds.
