Controversial Sig Slide Rattle

Sorry to go off subject but was wondering if anyone has had any experience with 17lbs wolf hammer springs on their 226s. Was considering putting one in my IDPA gun. Saw one person post earlier that they had no trouble with theirs, wondering if anyone else has used them.

Not a 226 but my 229/40 has one..

Best just get a main spring kit from Wolff, around 20 bucks, that comes with, IIRC, 5 mainsprings, 21lb, 20, 19, 18, 17lb, 16, and their easy to swap out with the factory 24lb one. T

The key is do you have a long main spring, top to bottom of grip or a short main spring with a aprox 1" *plastic base/bottom and go from there.. *least this is for 229's, not having a 226 to gauge fyi.

I went between 18lb and 17lb thinking the 17lb was too good, and the 18lb was just a tad, not to my liking, so I put the 17lb back on and it went thru the first 500 rounds without any light-strikes. That was some 3700 rounds back and it's still going 100% with any new ammo.

Takes about 3 days to receive from Wolff

My Sig P220 Beavertail model is very tight , very little wiggle , but no rattle on the slide to frame fit. My Sig P220 Platinum was the same. Both very very accurate and reliable.
My W.German P226 on the other hand rattles a lot , but is still very accurate.

Just from research, reading, speaking with others, and working with 1911s, I have seen that there are several sides to the fit issue. Most reputable smiths say that a tight slide to frame fit is not as essential to accuracy than the barrel lock up/bushing fit. Some will even go as far to say that it is only around 12-15% responsibe for the total accuracy of the gun. The reliability side of things is more toward loose slide to frame fit. I have heard a few argue that the tight tolerances keep debris out, but I have to disagree with them. I know personally that fine desert sand/dust will find a way in, as will other debris.

mY 229r 9MM is the only Sig I have that rattles. Doesn't effect reliability or accuracy. Superbly accurate and totally reliable rattle and all.

My new (about month and a half old) Sig p239 SAS does have a bit loose fit of slide to frame. It came this way, and it is about the same after 6 boxes of ammo. I'm somewhat disappointed, as this is custom shop model... I have noticed that several similar (both SAS and regular ones) I have handled have pretty tight fit: slide runs easily and smoothly, but it will not rock if you apply force from one side to another back and forth. One more thing I have noticed is that all these well fit ones I have handled have frame manufactured in Germany - this is engraved on the frame. It is also possible that they have been manufactured some time ago. Their serial numbers begin with two letters "SA" followed by numbers. Frame of mine seems to be manufactured in US (well, I'm ashamed... I always thought we have pretty good labor here in US). My serial number begins with letters "SBU" followed by numbers. (Does "U" deciphers into "US made... everything"?). Anyway, as I said I'm a bit disappointed by Sig I got. To its credit I must say it shoots pretty well, I am the limiting factor in accuracy, not my Sig. Will I get another Sig? I don't know. I definitely will think twice. I hope this all helps those who are making their decision.
