Abraham Lincoln once asked a queston: "If you call a tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have?"

The answer is, "four." It doesn't matter what you call it, a tail is not a leg.

And it doesn't matter what you call it, a revolver, lever action or pump is not a semi-automatic.

+1, Vern. Well said (both you and old Abe). This entire thread is pretty much an answer in search of a question.

well, after speaking to a local shop owner and respected gunsmith, I found a very simple and easy explanation... simply put... a semi-automatic is a designation given to a pistol, a revolver is not classified as a pistol but simply as a revolver..there it is, simple easy explanation... though I think this may start the argument anew.

If you fire a semi-auto, a round is replaced in the pipe, wether or not you pull the trigger again.
If you fire a revolver, there is no round in the pipe, UNTIL you pull the trigger again.
Simple.
Question answered/explained.
End of thread maybe?

I was looking for non-mechanical reasoning. I understand the mechanics of the two, I got a very simple and impartial answer, but was unable to get that through this thread. I thank the participants, and the gunsmith who finally gave a logical justification that had nothing to do with the mechanics of the gun.

When comparing mechanically different systems, there is no room for non mechanical reasoning.
The reason a revolver is classified differently from a pistol is because of the mechcanics.
Sometimes simple ain't to some.

So now only pistols can be semi auto? What's my SKS then? And what's a Mateba carbine?

lol... wow... how bout this... to my NEW understanding, the revolver was developed prior to the pistol and other semi-automatic weapons... it cannot be referred to as a semi-auto because they were developed later... as far as the mateba (the semi-auto revolver, oxymoron) it is disputable... it is a mix of old ideas with new technology and pretty damn cool too.... most in this thread have agreed that in order for a semi-auto to be a semi-auto, the expanding gas from the discharged cartridge must cycle the weapon, eject the casing, and "feed" the next round... the mateba fulfills two of these but does not eject the shell( to my understanding?) so that is your call...
